Default My 2008 NBA Mock Draft 1st and 2nd Rounds w/ comments!

This is my 1st draft of my 2008 Mock draft. I put in a lot of research using what I've whatched, 3 or 4 credible sites, and team needs, along with potential, and past drafting history. I will edit if certain players stay or go, as needed. I would love some honest feedback, as I have put a lot of thought and effort. My 1st round I feel is solid, the 2nd starts to be debatable at points because of my lack of knowledge about some of the players, especially foreigners. I have a feeling I've left out a player or two from the 2nd round that shoulda been there. I only did NBA comparisons for 2nd rounders I feel will be impactful. Enjoy!!

    First Round
    1 Heat Michael Beasley PF
    19 years old; 6'9"; 220 lbs.
Kansas State, Freshman User Comments: NBA Comparison: Antawn Jamison meets Glenn Robinson. The best overall player with a huge upside. Pair him with Dwayne Wade and that could be a deadly 1-2 punch; question is, will there be enough shots for both of them?

    2 SuperSonics Derrick Rose PG
    19 years old; 6'4"; 180 lbs.
Memphis, Freshman User Comments: Comp: Gary Payton meets Jason Kidd...In need of a point guard to help Durant get open shots to up his FG%. Rose will also be able to look for offense with Jeff Green handling some of the offense intiation.

    3 Grizzlies Kevin Love PF/C
    19 years old; 6'9"; 255 lbs.
UCLA, Freshman User Comments: omp: Vin Baker...Grizzlies need a face for the franchise, and a post presence to compliment Gay's developing game. Love's passing abilities, and jumpshot will help in developing Mike Conley.

    4 Timberwolves DeAndre Jordan C
    19 years old; 7'0"; 260 lbs.
Texas A&M, Freshman User Comments: Comp: Tyson Chandler...Wolves need a C to move Jefferson back to natural PF position. Jordan is a project but has the physical tools to dominate.

    5 Knicks O.J. Mayo PG/SG
    20 years old; 6'5"; 195 lbs.
USC, Freshman User Comments: Comp:Stephon Marbury...Knicks in need of a point guard, and a new star, after divorce with Marbury. Walsh starts off tenure with a bang taking most known name in draft.

    6 Clippers Eric Gordon SG
    19 years old; 6'3"; 215 lbs.
Indiana, Freshman User Comments: Comp: A Better Ben Gordon...Will bring another scoring threat to go along with Brand and emerging Thorton. Will soften the blow of Maggette departing and will eventually take Mobley's place in offense.

    7 Bucks Danilo Gallinari SF
    19 years old; 6'9"; 209 lbs.
Armani Jeans Milano, International User Comments: Comp: Lamar Odom... Fills a gaping void left by failed expirement of Bobby Simmons. Will take pressure of intitiating offense from Mo Williams.

    8 Bobcats Roy Hibbert C
    21 years old; 7'2"; 272 lbs.
Georgetown, Senior User Comments: Comp: Brad Miller... Bobcats continue honored tradition of drafting big-name player from big school with a history of winning. Will help take some pressure of Okafor to defend and rebound. His passing and mid-range game help open up Bobcats stale offense.

    9 Pacers Jerryd Bayless PG/SG
    19 years old; 6'3"; 199 lbs.
Arizona, Freshman User Comments: Comp:Monta Ellis...Will soon take over for Tinsley who has worn out welcome in Indiana. His penetrating and scoring ability will help open up Danny Granger.

    20 years old; 7'0"; 260 lbs.

    12 Kings Anthony Randolph SF/PF
    18 years old; 6'11"; 220 lbs.
LSU, Freshman User Comments: Comp: Clifford Robinson...Kings in rebuilding mode take a prospect player. Freakish athleticism paired with height make him perfect for an up-tempo style mismatch at 3/4. Can he reach potential?

    20 years old; 6'1"; 165 lbs.
UCLA, Junior User Comments: Comp: Brevin Knight.... Joins Blazers who have all-stars in the making in Roy, Oden, and Aldridge. Jack may not be the PG of future due to his combo guard skillset. Collison's pass-first mentality and overall patience along with clutch-play and ability to hit open shots make him a better fit than Lawson here.

    14 Nuggets Ty Lawson PG

    16 76ers Nicolas Batum SF
    19 years old; 6'8"; 214 lbs.
Le Mans Sarthe Basket, International User Comments: Comp: Caron Butler... With no immediate need for a rapidly improving Sixers team, they draft aa question mark for most GM's. Batum could end up being the steal of the draft eventually starting, moving Iggy to the 2 and keeping Young at the 4, Batum at the 3 creates an uber-athetic team for Miller to throw lobs to.

    17 Wizards JaVale McGee C
    20 years old; 7'0"; 237 lbs.
Nevada, Sophomore User Comments: Comp: Stromile Swift: Amazing athletic potential, but sadly I don't think he will reach it. He likes to be a jump shooter already, but can't shoot that great.

    20 years old; 6'9"; 215 lbs.
Kansas, Sophomore User Comments: Comp: Shareef Abdur-Rahim... A tweener forward, but has huge upside. Pairing him with Sean Williams defense could benefit both players.

    23 Jazz Courtney Lee SG/SF
    22 years old; 6'5"; 200 lbs.
Western Kentucky, Senior User Comments: Comp: Steve Smith... A late-round gem, this senior's all-around game and polsh instantly gels with Jazz's need for a 2 guard.

    24 Spurs Tyler Hansbrough PF
    22 years old; 6'9"; 230 lbs.
North Carolina, Junior User Comments: Comp: Malik Rose... A high motor and work ethic makes Spurs drool. He has limited skills and upside, but can be a solid contributor off the bench.

    From
    Suns DeVon Hardin C

    28 Hornets Donte Greene SF/PF
    20 years old; 6'10"; 220 lbs.
Syracuse, Freshman User Comments: Comp: Rashard Lewis... A 3/4 combo who has all the athleticism but tends to be a jumpshooter. He will eventually take Peja's place in offense.

    29 Pistons Chris Douglas-Roberts SG/SF
    21 years old; 6'7"; 200 lbs.
Memphis, Junior User Comments: Comp: Bonzi Wells... Pistons add even more young players to their roster. Douglas-Roberts' solid offensive game makes him a valuable pick for Detroit.

    30 Celtics Shan Foster SG
    21 years old; 6'6"; 205 lbs.
Vanderbilt, Senior User Comments: Comp: Kelenna Azubuike... A catch and shoot 3 point specialist will provide a spark off the bench.

Love at 3 seems a stretch.

If the Pacers got Bayless and White I'd be doing cartwheels. I keep seeing Bayless as top 5 though.

I don't know if I would draft Love that high right now, but he could possibly give the production you think he will. Just not worth it that high IMO. Your draft actually looks pretty good. Keep posting here!!

not really sure with recent nba news, but if brand becomes a f/a arent the grizz supposed to be at the top of the list?

which means they won't need love because they'll have brand, warrick, gay, and miller. they'd probably need to draft a guard. not sure if conley is working out too well over there.

personally, i'm a big fan of hakim warrick.

Western Kentucky, Senior User Comments: Comp: Steve Smith... A late-round gem, this senior's all-around game and polsh instantly gels with Jazz's need for a 2 guard.

    24 Spurs Tyler Hansbrough PF

The picks for the Nets are just fine and the only issue is that I've heard rumor that Budinger won't enter the draft... Besides, since the Nets are already out of play-off hunt, they may get a higher draft pick though. If we could draft Brook Lopez at No.9 or No.10 pick then it would be much better though.

I just can't see Love going #3. If the Grizzlies really want him, I'm not sure why they wouldn't just trade down to pick 10 or so to get him. I agree that the Grizz need a face for the franchise, but winning is the most important thing in putting fans in the seats, so with the 3rd pick I think you have to go with the best available that isn't a PG.

I'm not sure why you think the Knicks would pick Mayo if you are comparing him to Marbury. I think Bayless is a much more likely pick if he is available, and I'm not sure what Walsh is thinking, but I would imagine in an effort to dump of their players, this pick may be used as trade bait to perhaps pick up some vets who can correct things faster. They certainly won't get equal value in return for their players, but some vets who are proven winners could correct things pretty fast with young guys like Lee, Robinson, and Chandler. NY wants to win now, and Mayo won't make them win any more games than they have this year.

I can't believe Hibbert would go that high anymore as well. He is soft so while he would certainly help big a presence inside, he won't defend or rebound all that well. He is big and would take up space, but you could pick up Olowokandi to do that. Hibbert would be drafted more for his scoring and his size would just be an added extra. With that said, I think he would be a good fit with the Bobcats coming off the bench with Okafor and Wright starting at C and PF.

I think you have both Bayless and Brook Lopez going too low, but that is a just a personal opinion.

I really like Collison to the Blazers. That is an emerging defensive giant, and Collison would be the perfect player to install at the point.

I like Arthur and Budinger to the Nets, but I would probably flip their spots.

I think the Jazz will be pretty happy with Brewer at the 2, and with Thabeet on the board, I can't imagine they would pass him up.

I like a lot of your ideas and picks, but I just think you may go a little too much into team need because a lot of teams just go with the best available. Although with this drafting being so full of potential role players and specialists, it would be the perfect draft to go based on need becuase there is something for every team out there to fill a hole.

I gotta say, this is a pretty damned good draft. Even included a mini-breakdown of each pick, and they were all well reasoned. Very well done, million times better than nbadraft.net.

Good draft, but where is Nikola Pekovic of Partizan Belgrade?
He just destroyed (an hour ago) Tiago Splitter (of TAU Ceramica) in Euroleague...

i believe you have deandre jordon WAY to high- a flip flop of jordon & lopez may make more sense- i do agree with your reasoning on why minnisota might want a center- i just think that lopez thabeet & javale mcgee & even hibbert should all go ahead of jordon

as a huge nuggets fan i would throw up if lawson was taken in that spot- nugs do need a pg badly, im just not a fan of lawson as an nba gaurd- i see a very low cieling jameer nelson style- mainly any gaurd the nugs bring in would need to be able to defend both gaurd spots, as iverson is unwilling or unable to cover a 1st or 2nd scoring option - maybe if ai is gone lawson could be a possibility- i would be very very dissapointed though

my choice for what i feel the nugs need is russel westbrook- are you assuming westbrook returns to ucla? i just cant picture westbrook returning if collison and love leave- if anything i could see love and collison returning more than westbrook- 4 final fours for collison would be awsome- and i feel love would secure a top 3 pick with another year and a better body&conditioning- & 2 titles?

with both lawson & augustine i feel maybe people arent quite realising that a cris paul is a once in a generation player- 5-10 guys generally are not made for the nba- you may be right that they both are taken lottery- i just dont think either should be

Great work, but I have to disagree on a few fronts. First, the Nets, who I cover, will pick higher than 15th with the playoffs out of reach, probably closer to 11th. Next, as someone mentioned Budinger may stay at 'Zona, though he's a nice pickup. Arthur does not fit well, he's another Josh Boone, Sean Williams, DeSagana Diop. Not a well-developed offensive game, undersized for a center, and reliews on defense. The Nets need a big man with a post game that can hit a 10 footer.

Brook Lopez you say, good thought. Unfortunately, I expect Lopez to shoot up the board, he's already ahead of Hibbert so that's a mistake on the draft board. Mayo's stock may fall before the end of June, and DeAndre Jordan's going to be one of those risky high-ceiling picks. He sat the bench in big minutes for a mediocre A&M team. I'm still not sold that Augustin will come out - especially after that butt whipping at the hands of Rose, or a few others in the mid-rounds. Good start though.
