David Stern retirement date will be Feb 1, 2014
David Stern informed the NBA’s Board of Governors today that he will step down as NBA Commissioner on Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years to the date he took over the position. Stern also announced that the Board of Governors voted unanimously to accept his recommendation that Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver succeed him as Commissioner.
“Adam is a world-class business executive who has influenced so many areas of our business during his tenure with the NBA,” Stern said. “I am pleased that the Board has chosen him as my successor and I know the NBA will be in very good hands.”

Good, he's been there too long.

I feel likes he's said repeatedly he won't be here by the time this labor agreement is up. Also, how does the league honor its greatest commissioner?

Why did he pick that day? That's the day before the Super Bowl in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Of course. But Stern has been there so long it almost feels at times like he's making decries as emperor. And he's increasingly out of touch where people want the NBA to be. He's saved by having mercurial talents and personalities like Lebron, Howard etc. that drive the sport. BUt some of the decisions make me shake my head. A new voice would be nice.

People say the same thing about Goodell and the NFL and yet it's more popular then ever. I do think it's time for him to go but Stern can never win in the eyes of the people. While there might be a brief happiness that Silver is the new commissioner, it wont last. I guess this type of attitude comes with the job.
