WELCOAT SERIOUS IN BUILDUP, TAGS BELASCO FOR CABATU
Aljamal to TNT, Lanete to Purefoods
Monday, 20 August 2007
Veteran player Nic Belasco is going to Welcoat, sophomore pro Junjun Cabatu to Alaska and rookie draftee Yousif Aljamal to Talk N Text.
With the 2007 PBA Rookie Draft over, most of the ballclubs have started trying to boost their rosters with Belasco, Cabatu and Aljamal among the players involved in trade deals consummated thus far.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->
Red Bull earlier acquired Mark Andaya for nothing from Air21 while Purefoods signed up rookie free agent Chico Lanete for a two-year contract worth P5 million.
Welcoat is showing great resolve to make an impact in the coming 33rd PBA season, recruiting Belasco from Alaska after picking Joe Devance and Ryan Arana from the Rookie Draft Sunday.
The Dragons, the league whipping boys last campaign, acquired Belasco in exchange for Cabatu. Belasco is a restricted free agent with his previous playing contract with Alaska expiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.
Welcoat and Alaska closed the deal a few minutes before the Draft held at the Market! Market! Activity Center in Taguig.

Welcoat taps Belasco; TnT gets Aljamal
By Nelson Beltran
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
Welcoat continued its team rebuilding, hoping to turn its fortunes around in its second season in the pro league as it recruited reliable veteran forward Nic Belasco from Alaska Milk after picking Joe Devance and Ryan Arana from the Rookie Draft Sunday.
The Dragons, tail-enders on both the All-Filipino and Reinforced conferences last campaign, acquired the signing rights on Belasco in exchange for sophomore center-forward Junjun Cabatu. Belasco is a restricted free agent with his previous playing contract with Alaska expiring at the end of the 2006-07 season.
Meanwhile, Yousif Aljamal is headed for Talk n Text since the Piltel franchise and Air21, even before the draft, agreed on a trade deal involving the services of the San Beda do-it-all star.
Air21 selected Aljamal at No. 8 overall in Sunday’s draft. Talk n Text didn’t have a chance to tab the 6-foot-3 forward since the Phone Pals had given up their 2007 first round pick on a previous trade transaction.
Talk n Text team manager Frankie Lim, in a text message to The STAR, said they’re still working on what to offer in exchange for their acquisition of Aljamal.
Air21 coach Bo Perasol said the team is likely to keep their three other draftees in JC Intal, Doug Kramer and Marvin Cruz.
The three and another rookie hopeful RJ Masbang join the Express as they start their training today at the Xavier Gym in San Juan.
“With the entry of Intal, Kramer and Cruz, we now have nine players in our lineup. (Injured player) Gary David is our 10th man. We’ll look for two other players from the free agent pool,” said Perasol.
Draft aspirants not picked Sunday automatically joined the free agent pool. Among noted players not drafted were guards Khiel Misa, Reed Juntilla and Wynsjohn Te.
Over at Welcoat, more trades may happen in the next few days with the team looking forward to build a competitive lineup for the coming 33rd PBA season.
“For sure, we will improve with the addition of Devance. We’ll be more competitive than last season. But we may be hard-pressed for a championship,” said coach Leo Austria.
Welcoat co-owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que were upbeat in the composition of the team after getting Devance and Arana from the draft.
“Everybody was looking at Devance. But they seemed to overlook Arana. The guy’s a winner,” said Yu of the former La Salle mainstay.
Meanwhile, the PBA Commissioner’s Office has scheduled a pre-season tourney, also featuring a visiting team from South Korea, next month.
Alaska Milk is the defending champion in the pre-season tourney, serving as the appetizer to the coming season which opens Oct. 14 at the Araneta Coliseum.

SLR Targets Brunei Cup Championship
Sta. Lucia Realtors will target at least the championship in the coming 7th Brunei Cup Basketball Championship. This is in relation with the signing up of Ex-California State University, Fullerton (US-NCAA Division 1) standout Ryan Reyes along with natural shooting guard Anthony Johnson as reinforcement.
Johnson, who led Kansas Cagerz to capture the 2007 USBL championship with an amazing average of 16.4ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.2apg, FGP: 50.3%, 3FGP: 35.7%, FT: 77.0%, boosts more the chances of the team. Johnson was also a former import of PBA's Coca Cola Tigers.
The Realtors also signed another top rookie Melvin Mamaclay and free agent Philip Buttel to complete its roster.
Philippine national team standout Kelly Williams (196-F-82, college: Oakland) will be expected to banner the team after performing well in the last FIBA Asian Championship in Japan. Veterans and former national team members Marlou Aquino and Dennis Espino are also expected to provide additional firepower to the team.
Realtors can probably match up well against any teams in the tournament with Aquino, Espino, Williams, Johnson and Reyes in the starting line-up.
The squad will leave the country on Thursday with the hope of bringing the championship back home.
Other participating teams are RP Harbour Centre National Team, Darwin Airport Resort All-Star, Jordan All-Star, Singapore Slingers and LG Sakers.

RP Harbour Centre National Team beats PBA's Ginebra, Norwood begged off to play in Brunei
by Hector Santos
Philippine Basketball League backed RP Harbour Centre National Team won its tune up game against Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings yesterday at the Greenmeadows Gym.
The win, 77-68, will be a moral boost for the team which will leave today for Brunei to compete in the 7th Brunei Cup (August 25 to September 2).
Christian Coronel (176-G), Joshua Urbiztondo, Jason Castro, Jeffrey Chan, Eric de la Cuesta, Robert Sanz, Beau Belga (196-C), Dennis Daa, Chad Alonzo, Jerwin Gaco, Lawrence Bonus, Nestor David and former pros Allan Salansang and Ato Morano consists the line up the team that will compete in the Brunei joust.
Filipino-American Gabriel Norwood, who last played for the RP team that competed in the FIBA-Asia tournament in Japan, begged off from the tournament but will be available for the coming SEA Games in Thailand.
Norwood's absence will definitely lessen the chances of the squad in the Brunei competition.
Other participating teams in the Brunei tournament are PBA's Sta. Lucia Realtors, Jordan All-Stars, Korean Basketball League's LG Sakers, Darwin Airport Resort All Star and Australia National Basketball League's Singapore Slingers.

ALASKA OWNS RIGHTS ON BIG MAN BONO
No. 1 overall pick Devance signs max 3-yr pact with Welcoat
Friday, 24 August 2007
The Alaska Aces have been in the PBA so long not to know their assignments in the annual Rookie Draft.
The reigning Fiesta Conference champions are on vacation in Los Angeles,
California, and team manager Joaqui Trillo has been comfortable with the thought that negotiations with their draftees can be done smoothly upon their return by the first week of September.
Trillo was not aware a wrong report back home sowed confusion, prompting other teams to entertain hopes they can acquire prized big men Ken Bono and JR Quinahan.
"Officials from other teams called up when they heard news that Alaska has yet to tender an offer on Bono," said Edgar Tan, who represents the former UAAP MVP.
"Akala ko rin wala pa. But Bono has confirmed to me that he has signed a paper with Alaska right on draft day," Tan added.
Air21, a team still looking to shore up its frontline, was the first to inquire on Bono

2007 PBA Steal of the Draft
I think Joselito " Jojo" Duncil is the steal of the 2007 PBA Draft probably one of the best draft in recent years.
We might be seeing another soon to be Mark Caguioa in the PBA. DUncil is probably one of the best athlete in this years Draft Class and he is also a proven Clutch Shooter.
The thing that i like about Duncil is this guy is very coachable and does not have any bad attitude towards the game. He might actually get enough playing time as a Rookie after Larry Fonacier was traded to the San Miguel Beermen a couple of weeks ago.
Jojo Duncil Player stats
2006 UAAP Season ( 14 games)
Overall 14 Games 29.1 MPG, 15.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.5 APG
2006-07 PBL 1st Conference ( Kettle Corn)
16.1 PPG

Coach Binky Favis will decide who are in and who are out in the Coca-Cola Tigers roster in the next two days as they start serious training next Monday.
Favis said he has 10 players enjoying live contracts and the team management is currently negotiating with new recruit Mark Telan and rookie draftee Ronjay Buenafe for their own pacts.
With the league now allowing a 14-man roster for each team, Coca-Cola can accommodate two more from among veteran free agents William Antonio, Chester Tolomia, Ervin Sotto, Mike Gavino, Gerard Francisco and Leo Avenido.
