    Default Cheeks Fired

Why on earth can't Joe Dumars hire a good head coach? Nobody was thrilled with this hiring in the first place. There's good guys available and we have good young players. It's not like it isn't an attractive place to be because of that. At least we can move on from this one now too.......

[QUOTE]The Detroit Pistons announced today that Maurice Cheeks has been relieved of his head coaching duties. The Pistons recorded a 21-29 record over Cheeks

Pistons fans want Rasheed Wallace to get a chance at the head coaching spot apparently. I'm not sure Sheed would even want it. From the rumors it sounds like the Pistons are very interested in Lionel Hollins. I think he would be the first good candidate we've had in a while. He shouldn't have been fired from Memphis. He did a very good job there. I like what he did with two bigs there too. I still think it would be interesting to look at Patrick Ewing getting a chance too. Or possibly Bill Laimbeer. Ewing has interviewed for a ton of jobs, has a very high bball iq, and for some reason just can't get his first crack at head coaching. I think he would be great fit for the front line of the Pistons too.

Yeah I like the prospect of Ewing as Head Coach, but interviewing for SOOO many head coaching jobs and failing to land a single gig? - has to be some red flags there you would think... If he was any good surely one of the many, many teams that have interviewed him would of hired him...

Hollins - Now THERE is our next head coach - heres to hoping...

George Karl, the reigning coach of the year - any chance he returns?

I doubt Sheed wants to coach but would love to keep him around as a specialist coach or even head assistant coach. He seems to be able to connect with our players extremely well and who better to teach post O and D to our young bigs...

I'm not sure that George Karl fits in Detroit. In general we like our teams to be tough and play defense. Karl likes offense, fast breaks, and doesn't care about defense enough.

Yeah I would rather all the coaches we have discussed over Karl...

Sheed does intrigue me to be honest - his Bball IQ is absolutely through the roof... He has an ore about him that just creates respect... I would be interested to see him coach down the track for someone...

While the idea intrigues me, I don't think it would fit. I have a hard time imagining him keeping his emotions in check which is the exact opposite of what the Pistons need right now. He makes a great assistant coach though.

One other thought is Nate McMillan. I'm sure he wouldn't want to interview with anybody until after the season, which could be one reason why Detroit is waiting. I'm pretty sure he was a finalist last time. He was one of my favorites to get the job over Cheeks. Pretty much everywhere he goes he exceeds expectations. He's a defensive minded guy so that fits in perfect with what Detroit likes. He's done a great job in Indiana and has International experience too. I put him right at the top of my list.

I was actually hoping that he would be the pick this last summer. Now? I think we need to worry about getting an above average gm and have some faith in his coach selection.

I would love to see some outside the box thinking for the gm (like, phil jackson?) and let them make a coaching evaluation.
If you look at the guys succeeding as recent hires, almost all of them are analytical/coach guys (long term assistant coaches under great coaches).

Mo cheeks was a bad hire from the get go and many of us knew that. The last coaching hire I was ok with was saunders (and even that had some queasiness).

anyways, back on track, nice to see aussiedunker and others still posting in here.

    This season =

^^ There are about 4 or 5 of us staying loyal through this tough stretch, I just wish we had more positive stuff to post on outside of Drummonds potential...

Rumor has it the Pistons are going to make a pitch for Tom Izzo. I think it would be crazy for him to leave MSU for the Pistons, but it's certainly worth a shot.

Marc Jackson is now available... Is this someone we should seriously consider for the head coaching gig?...

I think he was pretty stiff to get fired, had the full support from the players - could be a good option...

I was just coming here to post he's someone that we need to contact. I feel like he would be a great fit in Detroit. He's a guy who loves defense and I feel like Golden State made a horrible move. I don't understand the behind the scenes on why he couldn't get along with assistants or management, but in Detroit they're going to hire a new GM anyhow. They could find a GM that would work with Jackson.

I still think if I was the GM I would be trying to get Hollins over Jackson,

Stan Van Gundy is another interesting choice - he had a team that was built around Dwight so he would know exactly how to utilize and develop Dre...

We should be interviewing all three, no doubt

    Or Billups

I like SVG on ESPN and as a person, but I'm not a big fan of his coaching. I'd rather not even interview him.

    Fair call,

How about Hollins vs Jackson?... I think both were brutally hard done by their respective teams - both deserve to be head coaches in this league
