CARDONA, BILLONES KEY SERIES CLINCHER FOR TNT

Phone Pals arrange Finals showdown vs. Alaska

    Monday, 02 July 2007

The reigning champions hit the end of the road, setting the stage for a new rivalry in a PBA finals.

Talk n Text arranged a first-ever title showdown with Alaska Milk as the Pals foiled the Red Bull Barakos' title-retention bid in the 2007 Talk n Text PBA Fiesta Cup.

The Pals rode high on career games of Macmac Cardona and Egay Billones to oust the Barakos, 122-110, in the sixth game of their best-of-seven semifinals showdown at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Cardona came through with 38 points -- his third career-best output in their last seven games

    2007 PBA Mock Draft

    Updated: July 4, 2007

    By: Lebron23 aka Baller 1986

    1. Joe Devance (Welcoat Dragons)

    Height: 6-7
    DOB: Circa 1983
College: University of El Paso Texas
    Amateur Team: Toyota Balintawak
Awards: 2005 PBL Most Valuable Player of the Year, PBL Mythical 5 members (2)

Last year he could have been the top overall pick if he already completes all the major requirements in his citizenship issue. The 6-7 Devance is a former PBL Most Valuable Player Devance is average 15.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in his last PBL Stint in 2005-06 Seasons. I think Welcoat in order to booster their frontline will select Devance in this year’s draft he will give the young Welcoat franchise some scoring in the low posts and help Jay R Reyes in his rebounding choirs.

Best Case Scenario: Paul ASI Taulava, Ali Peek

    Mid Case Scenario: Dorian Pena

    Name: Ken Bono
    College: Adamson University

    Height: 6’6
    Weight: 240 lbs.

the 2006 UAAP Most Valuable player and 1st team Mythical member Ken Bono 6-6 Montana / Adamson. Bono is undeniably, the UAAP's top big man currently. He has great shooting touch that reminds you of Jun Limpot but has the size and the body to bang against anybody. He also reminded us of a young Eric Menk in his PBL Days. The Current UAAP MVP of Season 69 has declare his intention to enter this years PBA Draft.

4.Ryan Reyes (Coke traded to SMB) - Ryan Reyes

    Height: 6-2
    Weight: 180 lbs
    Team: Henkel Sista
    Age: 23 yrs.old
    Amateur Team: Henkel Sista
    Awards: 2007 PBL Mythical 5 members (2)

Reyes is the first rookie to submit his resume before the deadline, they might have selected Reyes 1st first overall in this years draft if big men Ken Bono and Joe Devance will not submit their resume. SMB is in love with Reyes' game - no-nonsense, Court general, loves the dirty work inside and has full of energy, something their current big men lacks. Ryan Reyes is a very special player that has the potential to be one of the best point guards ever, and he captured the nation’s attention as a Rookie when he led Henkel Sista to the Semi Finals of the PBL Tournament.

He has since helped his stock even more. His extreme quickness and slick handle combine to make him possibly the hardest point guard in the country for defenders to stay in front of. He is an unselfish player and gifted passer that drops dimes that no one in the gym sees coming. He is one of the most entertaining players anywhere, because not only is he a slick ball handler and passer, but he has world class hops and the ability to beat his man off the dribble, get into the lane, rise above the opposing forward (and center) and throw down a nasty one-handed-flush that he had cocked back to the moon. You wouldn’t expect to see something like that from a kid as skinny as him, but Reyes plays without fear, and with a lot of swagger.

He is a southpaw with a good outside shot, but played with a pass-first mentality on his arsenal.

Talk about “sky is the limit”.

    Team: Toyota Balintawak
Award: MVP of the ABC Tournament, PBL Mythical 5 member (2), (2) PBL Most Valuable Player.

The 2007 PBL MVP one of the best combo guard in the NCAA and PBL would be an excellent pick for the young and upcoming Air 21 Express with Winnie Arboleda on the backcourt this will be an excellent run and gun team. With Jason Castro and Chico Lanete producing numbers befitting their status and Ryan Arana providing the needed firepower, the Batang Pier etched their names in the history books when they overpowered Cebuana Lhuillier Pera Padala, 90-75 and completed a swept of the PBL Unity Cup at the Olivarez Sports Center.

6.Jonas Villanueva (SLR) - Jonas Villanueva 6-0 Magnolia / Far Eastern University. Villanueva has the size and the skills to be an excellent pro. He showed his capability in the current UAAP season heading the Tamaraws' charge with only Chan and a bunch of newcomers. I think that with the departure of Alex Cabagnot and Kenneth Duremdes , I think the management realize that by picking Jonas Villanueva would be a suitable replacement for Alex Cabagnot.

Alaska is in need of a young PG that will complement Mike Cortez, we might see the 2nd coming of the Flying an in Marvin Cruz who is probably the best PG in the Amateur now. He is now one of the corner stone of the RP Harbour Team which won the 2007 SEABA Championship. In his last UAAP Stint Cruz average, 16.8 Points, 7.9 rebs, 0.2 Blks and 1.8 steals. He is a high energy Point Guard and probably the best PG in the UAAP in the last 5 years.

8 .JR Quinahan (Ginebra) - JR Quinahan 6-6 Granny Goose / University of the Visayas. Big man with nifty shooting and shotblocking will give the Ginebra Gin Kings interior presence underneath. And hey, he's starting to look like Shawn Daniels.

9.Douglas Kramer (Red bull), it is obvious that the Redbull management will select this 6-4 forward from Ateneo. With half of the lineup coming from Katipunan, I think this will be a reunion of some sort.

    10. JC Intal (Air 21) - JC Intal 6-4 Harbour Centre / Ateneo. Intal is a high-flyer and made fame after defeating Nino Canaleta in a dunkoff in the PBL All-Stars. Intal has made tremendous progress from a bit player in the Ateneo roster to the team's main man. JC Intal will be much of a reliever to wingmen Gary David

    Continuation

    2nd round

    10. Ryan Arana - a great slasher and a scorer this DLSU Greenarchers will probably one of these years steal of the draft. He shows that he can score as he pumps a career best 38 points against the weary Vietnam National Team.

11.Reed Juntilla- - Reed Juntilla- 6-1 Dazz Sing Patak / Mapua. Reed proved in the NCAA's and in the last PBL Cup that he's ripe for the pros. He has the size and the composure to play at 1. He has great tenacity and a winning attitude. Reminds you of Jeffrey Cariaso. Cone will be thrilled to have him.

    PBL Stats.

    15. 58 PPG, 3.42 RPG, 3.2 APG

12.Patrick Cabahug – a 6-2 scorer from Adamson University another player who can shoots from the outside and slash in the inside. He reminded me of a young Boy Cabahug and Al Solis.

13.Samigue Eman - 6-10 Rain or Shine / University of Mindanao. He was the BIG Ticket Eman is a project but has the best upside among all players in this list.. I think a great coach and a great system will help him to be able to improve his basketball skills.

14.Mark Borboran- he could have been included in the 1st round of the PBA draft but with the over flowing of the talent in this years draft. He could have been an easy 1st round pick in 2005 or 2007. Anyway the team that will pick him will be lucky enough the 6-2 Mark Borboran is a complete player and a decent defensive specialist. Borboran is the reigning PBL Rookie of the Year.

15.Bonifacio Custodio- another player who should have been included in the 1st round of these years 2007 Annual Draft. But like I said in my post about Mark Borboran we have a talent influx this year. Bonbon the 5-11 Gunner from Recto has his best year in the UAAP averaging 16.4 Points in 12 games. He is also a valuable asset to his team in the PBL. Custodio reminds us of a younger version of Vergel Meneses both are a great scorer and defender.

    16. Edwin Asoro – the NU Bulldogs top scorer will be a great addition to the team that will select him. He average 15.6 Points in his last years UAAP Season 69. His Body is pro material; remind me of a younger version of Nelson Asaytono in terms of physical strength in the low post.

    17. Jonathan Fernandez – 1/2 of the Dynamic NU Duo who is probably the pure scorer among this years draft with 15 PPG. Fernandez will be a great addition to any teams here in the PBA.

    18. Nestor David- a 6-3 forward from the UP Fighting Maroons. He averages 11.8 Points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists. In his last UAAP tenure and is a Mythical 2nd team member in the PBL.

Mock Draft will be updated everyday

    19. Yousef Aljamal 6-4 Rain or Shine / San Beda. Aljamal was a different player in the NCAA. He was shooting from everywhere, rebounding with gusto, and played with such great confidence that scouts was looking at him as the best player in the NCAA. Aljamal will be a decent big men and is very coachable.

    20. RJ Jazul- a up and coming Pg in the NCAA playing for the Letran Knights.

    PBA Finals Preview

    vs.

TUTOR & STUDENT FACE OFF IN FIESTA CONFERENCE FINALS

“Excited ako makalaban ang idol kong si Willie Miller” – Cardona

    Thursday, 05 July 2007

Time was when Willie Miller and MacMac Cardona would spend time working on some plays together when the former De La Salle stalwart was still trying to find his way around in the Philippine Basketball Association.

A year later, Miller and Cardona find themselves headed for a great showdown as Alaska and Talk N Text clash in the Finals of the season-ending PBA Fiesta Conference.

The anticipated matchup between two of the league's most explosive guards and leading candidates for the Best Player of the Conference award will be among the highlights on Friday when Game 1 of the best-of-seven title series is played at the Araneta Coliseum.

Funny, but neither of the two stars would have imagined that they would be up against each other in the championship a couple of seasons ago. Back then, they were both donning the yellow-and-blue jerseys of the Talk N Text Phone Pals with Miller tasked to guide Cardona – then a rookie - under his wings.

But fate had something in store for them.

Miller along with forward John Ferriols were traded by the Phone Pals to the Alaska Aces for forward Don Allado and a future draft pick in the summer of 2006 while Cardona slowly blossomed into a certified league superstar on his sophomore year.

As the last two teams standing head for center stage, Cardona admitted he's thrilled no end at the prospect of going up against Miller one-on-one.

"Sobrang excited na ko dahil first time ko ito sa Finals. At the same time, makakalaban ko `yung idol kong si Willie Miller," proclaimed the 6-foot-1 guard dubbed as “Captain Hook.”

Miller, who won two championships with Red Bull and the MVP in 2002, downplays Cardona's insinuation that he idolizes him, although he did remember the time when the Phone Pals guard was still learning the ropes under him.

"Dati kasi sa Talk N Text kami yung nagbabantayan. Ako yung tutor dati tapos siya yung sumusunod sa akin. Ako lagi yung nagsasabi sa kanya ng plays namin.

"Pero sa laro ako yung tinuturuan niya ng hook shot kung papano gawin, " Miller said, referring to Cardona's unorthodox trademark shot.

The demanding task of taking on Cardona at the defensive end loomed for Miller after veteran Jeffrey Cariaso, Alaska's best perimeter defender, hyperextended his calf muscle and won't be able to play at least in the first two games of the title series.

Miller, though, wouldn't comment on his assignment and neither would Alaska coach Tim Cone.

"Without a doubt Jeffrey (Cariaso) is a very experienced defender. He's guarded big time scorers, he's guarded imports throughout his career. Obviously he would be our no. 1 choice to defend MacMac.

"But we just have to get someone else to step up and do that. We haven't decided yet who's gonna do that," the American mentor said.

Whoever that may be will definitely have his hands full.

In the absence of their three stars – Jimmy Alapag, Asi Taulava and Renren Ritualo – are serving the RP Team that is trying to clinch a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Cardona has assumed the role as the team's go-to guy, more so during the Phone Pals' semifinal playoffs against deposed champion Red Bull.

During that series, Cardona averaged 27.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting from the field. He even recorded a new career-high 38 points in the series clinching Game 6 win.

That easily made him a hot favorite for the Best Player of the Conference plum and perhaps, a first ever Mythical team selection in the league.

Still, Cone doesn't believe the Finals would come down to a “Macmac Cardona Show,”stressing that everything will boil down on what "the five guys on the floor could do."

The Alaska coach, however, can't deny that Cardona will be a marked man this coming championship series.

And, yes, Miller will definitely have his eyes on Cardona. (DBC)

Mac Cardona lead the BPC Race

Showdown between lead star and former understudy

By Noli Cortez, Malaya Online Edition
    July 5, 2007

Stressing team play has always been Willie Miller's strong suit. Things will not be different when Miller and the Aces face the Talk N Text Phone Pals for the Fiesta Cup title in a best-of-seven championship series starting tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.

Even with the prospects of earning his second Best Player of the Conference a distinct possibility, the former league MVP is more concerned in helping the Aces cop the title.

"Kung darating iyun (BPC award), okay. Kung hindi naman, okay din, basta manalo kami ng championship," Miller told Malaya yesterday.

While Miller has been steady for the Aces, he has yet to flash his old fiery form. That is a must now, especially since the Aces are ranged against an equally formidable crew in the Phone Pals bannered by red-hot Mark Cardona.

Cardona has blossomed into the Phone Pals' go-to guy in the absence of TNT stars Asi Taulava, Jimmy Alapag and Ren-Ren Ritualo, who are on loan to the national team.

Cardona, who was the understudy of Miller while they were still playing together at the Manny Pangilinan franchise, shone best during the Phone Pals' semifinal playoffs against last year's champion Red Bull, averaging 27.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting from the field, including a new career high 38-point explosion in the 122-110 Game 6 clincher.

In contrast, Miller only averaged 12.7 points in their semis duel with San Miguel Beer, on top of 2.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

With those numbers, Willier, the BPC race leader after the eliminations, was relegated to fifth place after the semis with 29.9 statistical points, way below Cardona's front-running 32.3 SPs.

Vaulting into second is Purefoods' James Yap (32.1), followed by Sta. Lucia Realty's Kelly Williams (31.4) and Air21's Gary David (31.1).

    Rounding up the Top 10 are SMB's Danny Ildefonso (28.0, Air21's Mark Telan (26.9), Ginebra's Ronald Tubid (26.8), Air21's Arwind Santos (26.3) and TNT's Jay Washington (25.8).

Only the top five candidates are eligible for the BPC award, with the votes coming from representatives of the teams, Commissioner's Office and the media.

In the past, the usual practice is for only the top three to be considered but this may change since Purefoods, Sta. Lucia and Air21 failed to reach the semifinals.

Miller has a good chance of adding on to his first BPC award in the 2005 Fiesta Cup, which will also boost the odds in his bid to bag a second MVP after his first in 2002.

For Miller, however, the title is still the biggest thing up for grabs in the title series.

"Mas hindi nakakasawa ang championship," said Miller, who has already won two titles with Red Bull. "Isa pa, para sa buong team ang championship."
