Default What do you look for when picking players in a pickup game?

I always go like that, I will pick a big man first with interior rebounding/defense.
Second will be a pure scorer. Thirdly, the spot up shooter/ the playmaker / the energy guy.

inb4 black skin or something corny like that..

    but seriously.

I'll take a big dude who can rebound and block. Second I go for a defensive specialist/hustle player. A spot up three point shooter and a PF that can hit a mid range shot. I do most of the scoring. Me and my crew rarely lose at the rec

I'm known for not necessarily picking the best players. I like playing with players who run, move and play their position.

There are a lot of guys who play with us that are good shooters but they stand on the 3 point line waiting for the ball. Or they stand at the top of the key waiting for one of our bigs' to get the rebound so they can run the floor and score. I also don't like guys who insist on playing point but can't dribble against traffic, never look down court and don't play defense. I guess I don't look for the best players I avoid the players who don't play my style lol

Players with high Basketball IQ, Athletic.

I'm the type of person that doesn't mind having a big man on my team or not. If he's the opposition, I would see it as a challenge. If he's on my team, the game sometimes feels easier. However, this is a lot on perspective wise anyway

In pick-up I go for rebounding, athleticism, and size.

I handle and shoot the ball enough for everyone.

Avoid the tiny shotjacker who thinks he's Iverson or something.
Then pick a guy with offensive skills who's not too insufferable and a hustle guy who understands the game.

Pick all the scorers and people that won't pass to you. Get your ass down low and play defense and rebound. No one cares how good you are at scoring lol. Work on other aspects of your game that are weak. I don't care if its not fun.

Not to oversimplify things, but I pick the best players first. If a guy's a good bruiser and rebounder but not necessarily a great player, there's a good chance he'll be around for a later pick, whereas the highly skilled players tend to go quickly, so I pick for ability first, then "needs" later. Elsewise, I may end up filling my needs with guys who can kind of play while not having anyone that can really play.

I suck too but I like to play hard nosed defense and I like to box out and grab rebounds. And I honestly don't care if I score or not. Right now I am practicing to dribble better so I can play without the ball, but I prefer to play off ball.
