I use my immersion blender all the time for purees and soups.... also the one I bought (maybe a CuisinArt??) has multiple attachments for other uses like a whisk/eggbeater and an attachable large container with a blade that basically makes it into a standard food processor.

Also like Booze said, don't use it for mashed potatoes.... they'll turn out gummy.
