Well they signed Nash knowing about his liability on defense. They were probably hoping that Dwight (or Bynum if Nash was signed before Dwight dont remember too well) would anchor their defense and make up for those guards blowing by Nash.

What they didn't expect was Dwight failing hard this year, as well as the rest of the Laker's defense.
