"DETROIT, MI -- A Michigan man could go to jail for failing to pay child support. But the child he's accused of not paying for isn't even his, according to WXYZ in Detroit.
Carnell Alexander walked into the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice Friday, knowing in moments he could lose his freedom. Though DNA tests have proven the child isn't his, Alexander still owes more than $30,000 to the state because the child's mother used his name as the father to get welfare benefits.
Under Michigan law, that means Alexander owes child support. But an attorney who saw Alexander's story on the news wanted to help."
It just takes one judge, district attorney or politician to put and end to this. Yet no one will step up with the common sense to end this nonsense.

Give him custody and charge the mother with falsifying legal documents (putting his name down as the father for Welfare)

Please clap.

That would be further penalty of he didn't want to raise the kid.

This is one of many shit things wrong with America. If we want to be viewed as the best country in the world, we really need to stop this kind of nonsense.

Did he agree with his name being on the document to get welfare?

No but it's more complicated than that in this case from the little I read
He was served with a summons several years ago to argue against his paying child support.. he didn't show up in court because he was in jail and the summons was given to a relative of his so technically he never got served.. When he didn't show up the the court issued a judgement against him...
the problem is the man is uneducated, they say he has an 8th grade education and he's ignored multiple other calls from the state over the years to deal with it... only now that he is facing jail time is he doing something about dealing with the fallout
from the reports everyone is confident they'll get it straightened out as long as he shows up in court... then and only then can the state go after the real father who reportedly has a fairly healthy relationship with the child

Thanks for posting an actual in depth summary. It seems like one of those misleading headlines people always throw out there that when actually looked in to makes a lot more sense. We always get these stories here in Australia about how crazy the American legal system is and someone is suing someone for something stupid but usually when you look in to it the case is thrown out or there's more info that isn't being put in the stories.

Although this adds more sense to it, it still needs thrown out because he never should have owed money in the first place. If a loan company never gave me money, then said I owed them payments and I put off doing anything about it because I knew that I didn't actually owe anything (all while these payments accrue), I shouldn't have to owe them later simply because I never spoke up earlier and said it wasn't right.

all english speaking countries essentially have extremely similar common law based legal systems.
This guy had a problem he could have easily fixed years ago and just ignored it. It's probably not even that difficult of a fix now.

Here's a more detailed update on the case via Snopes, they do a good job of getting the original story straight and how it got to where it is now
