Sources say it was because of the whole off the court issues involving Gasol's fiance, Shannon Brown, Vanessa Bryant, and Kobe Bryant. That's when chemistry issues started to develop, and things took a turn for the worse. They have YET to recover. On court chemistry issues between him and Bryant, and then the way he's been used in a system w/ Andrew Bynum under Mike Brown, and now his alienation for not being motivated and in shape to run in D'Antoni's offensive system just threw gas on the flames.
You're busy ranting about Kobe. I'm not saying I disagree that Kobe should change his approach and philosophy THIS season. What I'm SAYING is that Pau Gasol on the Lakers hasn't played like Pau Gasol of 2008 - 2010 since December of 2010.
I'm not ranting on Kobe, I'm just saying that Pau's role has changed to a role he's not comfortable in and I used Kobe as an example. Would Kobe be as effective as a player playing as a distributor? Would Dwade be effective as a 3point specialist? Would Durant be as effective being used as a low post scoring PF? Probably not...
The off court problems may have had a problem with his play but I think the "decline" emerged with the emergence of Bynum which saw Gasol's prominence and role be slowly diminished. Bynum started to become the second option and he became the player in the post for LA.. Then they traded for Dwight who replaced Bynum as the main guy in the post for LA. He's not being used as a low post player or a #2 option guy anymore and that's where the decline of Pau and the Lakers as a team has occurred. Notice how they were championship level teams with Pau being the #2 guy and the main guy down low, Bynum during the championship years was non-existent practically..
