President Suharto

Suharto was born on Jun 8 1921. His parents were poor farmers in Kemusuk village in Central Java. In the 1940's he became the battalion commander in the Japanese "self defense corps" when Japan invaded and defeated the Dutch in World War 2. In the 1960's, he rose to power in relative obscurity as a middle ranking army officer after helping to crush an abortive but bloody leftist coup. By the 1980's, Suharto's six children built their own empires which now included banks, automobile manufacturing and cigarettes manufacturing. For years, Suharto helped Indonesia's economic growth, as well as his own. Until, consumption and overextending the foreign debt finally caught up to Indonesia in 1997. Suharto got financial help from the IMF but most of the $43 billion went to Suharto's and his family's pockets. After riots over rising food and fuel prices, Suharto money empire was exposed and he eventually resigned May 21, 1998. Suharto's Empire lasted from 1967 to 1998. He is currently ranked as the sixth richest person in the world with an estimated personal wealth of $16 Billion US.

The Dalai Lama is a revered spiritual leader among Tibetans. He is the most influential figure of the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect and has considerable influence over other sects of Tibetan Buddhism.[4] The Chinese government, whose occupation of Tibet in 1959 forced him into exile in India, regards him as the symbol of an outmoded theocratic system.[5]

On 17 November 1950, at the age of fifteen, he was enthroned as Tibet's Dalai Lama, thus becoming Tibet's most important spiritual leader and political ruler. This occurred only one month after the People's Liberation Army's invasion of Tibet[neutrality disputed].

After initially ratifying, under military pressure, the 1951 Seventeen Point Agreement, to co-exist alongside China, he left Tibet for India following the failed uprising due to the failure in both spirit and practice of the agreement, and the collapse of the Tibetan resistance movement in 1959. In India, he was active in establishing the Tibetan government-in-exile and in seeking to preserve Tibetan culture and education among about 80,000 Tibetan exiles that followed him.[8]

Tenzin Gyatso is described as a "charismatic" figure,[6][9] and he is a noted public speaker. He is the first Dalai Lama to travel to the West, where he has spread Buddhist teachings and promoted ethics and religious harmony. He was awarded honorary Canadian citizenship in 2006, and the United States Congressional Gold Medal on 17 October 2007.[10] He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.[6][11]
