Al Jefferson tore his ACL earlier this year. Injuries can happen to anyone. And it's not like Garnett is an injury-prone player.

Knowing KG, he'll probably try his best to be there during the ECF, assuming the Celtics reach it. Other than that, at least he knows he has some serious resting time (3-4 weeks?)

All human beings are injury prone at a certain age, and that's why there aren't 50 year olds in the league. So whether KG had shown it previously or not, there aren't many guys from his draft class still contributing, and the Celtics took a certain risk trading a whole bunch of young players for him.

Like I said, it paid off in a big way, so it's not like anybody's going to regret the deal.
