MEXICO CITY - A new flu virus suspected to have killed up to 81 people in Mexico could start a global epidemic, the World Health Organization warned Saturday, as the disease appeared to have spread in the United States.

Mexico's crowded capital of 20 million people, where most of the victims have died, hunkered down in fear of the swine flu, and the country's president assumed new powers to isolate sick people if necessary.

Kansas health officials said two people there had swine flu and a seventh case emerged in California near the Mexican border, taking the number of confirmed U.S. cases to 11. A married Kansas couple both were confirmed with a mild case. The husband recently visited Mexico.

The World Health Organization declared the outbreaks a "public health event of international concern" and said they could cause a pandemic - a global epidemic of serious disease.

..."We are worried and because we are worried we are acting aggressively on a number of fronts," the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat said Saturday. "The situation is serious."

The new strain of swine flu - a unique mixture of swine, human and avian flu viruses - is still poorly understood. The WHO Friday identified the virus from 12 Mexican patients as genetically the same as the strain, designated H1N1, seen in the Texas and Californian cases.

There have been cases of swine flu before, I think there was a bad outbreak at the turn of the last century. This one seems particularly bad because it's some evil hybrid of swine/bird/human infulenza. Good thing it's mostly in Mexico, those people never travel to the U.S.

Apparently 7 Americans have been diagnosed with this flu already in southern states.

This is a little scary to me because everyone one of the deaths so far has happened to 20-40 year olds who appear perfectly healthy prior to the flu hits. Regularly flu deaths are from elderly and children, but not the case with this one.

Wait so you suggest we sit around and let his virus affect everybody and let the very small minority who may be resistant to the strain (if any at all) live? And what happens during another outbreak to which they are probably not resistant?

Considering how global our society has become, you realize that would be the end of man right?

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard or read. Your notion of evolution seems very faulty when you say "we could actually evolve" and I doubt you know what you are talking about.
