I'll say Bill. Dr. J picked 6 because of Russ who he grew up idolizing.

i don't think thats true. why did he wear 32 on the nets/squires then and wait until he got to the nba to switch to 6? i was always under the impression that he wore 6 because his rights were sold to the sixers for $6 million. correct me if i'm wrong.
"That was it for the red, white and blue basketball. A month later, the NBA absorbed four ABA teams, including the Nets. But because Nets owner Roy Boe was forced to pay an $8 million fee to join, he sold Erving. Philadelphia forked over a reported $6 million, $3 million to Boe and $3 million for a new contract with Erving, who became an instant gate attraction and spokesman for the league."

I don't remember why he picked 32 originally but I heard Doc say once that #6 was the number of Bill Russell who he admired as a kid.

Obviously, it's Bill Russell. Erving was great and all, but Russell is a legitimate GOAT candidate.

Re: Greatest player to ever wear jersey number 6?
I know that #32 in Philadelphia is retired in honor of Billy Cunningham, in fact, according to the Sixers history page on their web site, it was retired in December 1976, in Dr. J's first season with the Sixers.
As far as the greatest player to wear #6, even the good Doctor himself would say Bill Russell. Erving was probably a better all-around player, but Russell won more.
