I live in SF and I can attest to that. I've hated every time I've been to NJ too btw. Most times have been to AC so that could explain it.

all that urban low-rise sprawl is beyond my comprehension, eh? venice is nice, i'll give you that. in venice, i got a taste of what LA could've been if they dumped the hollywood pretension and embraced the surf/eccentricity lifestyle. if i was somehow forced to move to LA (for work or whatever), i would definitely live in venice.

the rest of LA? the clubs, the suburbia, the pollution, the sprawl, the fakeness? miss me with that. any other city you can WALK - another negative factor in la is that the public transport is BEYOND horrible - and find dope little nooks and crannies. LA?

i'm not completely ragging on the town: there are good, talented people there - i have a few mates that live there that i love with all my heart - but in general, the people are cold and unfriendly. you don't get smiles, general chit chat on the streets, etc etc.

it's just not my scene at all, i guess.

Where there is extreme poverty and no jobs, there will be crime. I'm simply pointing out to Sergio that someone who lives in Cleveland is not going to be afraid to go anywhere in LA.

There is a part of me that would feel more privileged if my first thought upon seeing Compton and Skid Row was, "get me out of here... This is scary." But, alas, I see a lot worse every time I drive through East Cleveland.

It is a misnomer, though, that all people in Ohio are 'hicks.' Of course, there are rural areas out in the sticks that fit the bill, but Cleveland is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the country. That is something that I actually am proud of.

Obviously, my experience in LA wasn't all that positive. However, I understand it allure for some and I'm certainly not out to denigrate someone's home. I often have to deal with that living in Cleveland and it gets old really quickly.

It all comes down to the kind of city that you are comfortable with. Obviously, a lot of people love LA and more power to them.
@ dis fakkit calling cleveland a war zone

cleveland-102 murders, 109 the decade high

South Central(not even all of LA)- 268, 462 decade high (yes south central alone got over 450 murders)

Clevelands highest this decade was 23.8
Comptons highest was in the 70s.

How is that something to be proud of?

Also, if you want those stats to be credible, you need to factor in poulation and population density. But, again, it's nothing to be proud of.

What a moron, Cleveland apparently has the most dangerous neighbourhoods in America tied with Chicago in some report up on the OTC recently.

Detroit was pretty bad... But at the same time very interesting. Also, it was my first time in the States, so yeah, it was quite the experience.

I don't really like Brussels. It has beautiful historic areas, but the overall atmosphere just plain sucks ass.

Won't disagree there...I was there during a bus trip in 2001, on the way to Milwaukee to see my aunt and uncle (who have since moved to a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama). We had a 3-hour layover there, and it was on a Sunday morning, so except for the Greyhound station, nothing else around downtown was opened. In fact, I'm kinda surprised that their downtown area was pretty big for a city of its size.

To the answer, I have to say Las Vegas is pretty crummy. I mean, if you're not on the Strip, you're not missing much as far as the rest of the city. I had the misfortune to stay on Fremont Street in downtown L.V. during this past Labor Day weekend, and the hotel I wanted to book near the Strip was sold out. Of course, I realize that prostitution is legal in most of Nevada, but Fremont Street reminded me of a lot of the "tracks" I see around here in Los Angeles. It's also not to mention that Las Vegas (and pretty much anywhere along the Interstate 15 corridor between there and Riverside County in California) is pretty redneck-ish and backwater.
