So just like the rest of the country McLean, VA historic gas prices peaked around July 2008 then plunged to a multiyear low in Jan 2009.

Right around the time that demand for gasoline plunged worldwide. When families were cancelling vacations, when more and more people had no job to drive to, when the global economy got so bad, cargo containers were piling up in ports worldwide because less and less goods were being shipped.

So choosing Jan 2009 is a completely deceptive because it was the worst point of global economic crisis because it came right after an absolutely unprecedented drop in gas prices because demand bottomed out.

Let me put this another way. If you are saying this reflects badly on Obama, then you must think the last 8 months of the Bush years were paradise. After all, low gas prices equals happy Americans

If you want to see the peak gas price in the US, which occurred around July 2008, you need to set that graph to weekly prices not annual. Annual prices factors in the massive drop in prices in the last half of 2008.

So gas prices are high, but they are not the highest they have ever been.

Yes, I'm not arguing that this is not being felt in the Wallets of Americans.

I'm arguing that upward price of gallon of gas that has been going on since 2002 when Americans are working is continuing. The current gas prices are not unprecedented; we experienced higher prices in 2008 and this is why the weekly price chart is more accurate. It shows that if you take out the crisis years, gas prices are on increasing trend this past decade

The reasons for Gas Prices going up in the US is unfortunately long term. The market for oil is global. With economies like China and India rising so fast so quickly in the last few years, they are buying more oil. China and India have more than 1/3 of total population of the Earth. The economics of oil are such that even though we need oil from other countries, we export 1 million barrels of crude oil a year. (I'm guessing this is Alaskan oil to Canada because it would be too expensive to ship otherwise.)

As Macho Man points out it's the peak price that we tend to remember and has a big psychological effect. I don't know anyone who is saying, man, I wish this country could go back to January 2009 when gas in Virginia was a buck fifty a gallon.

How? I'm saying that the price of gas is rising under Obama and my stats prove it. Under Bush we might have experienced a very high peak but it was not sustained like it is under Obama.

Yes, we went through a high peak, but it was for a two month period and they quickly dropped soon after. Under Obama we have experienced sustained pain at the pump. The stats show that 2012 will be worse than 2011. Look at these numbers...

So far in 2012 on average we have been paying $3.64 a gallon, higher than in 2011, the highest on average ever.

Anyway, to get back to the convention, I thought Obama's speech was good , not great, but it probably got the job done.
