I think any bad name becomes normal and isn't as bad as it first seems. If a team were named the clippers nowadays people would be hating on that name too. Its all perspective. A cool logo and jersey could really change that, too.

I think it's more to due with the syllables, like baglered mentioned earlier.
Can New Orleans Pelicans be shorten somehow?
All those teams you mention has either 2 syllables or a shortened nickname. Seahawks, "Cards," "O's," etc.

LA Lakers sounds good, its completely meaningless and stupid but it just works.

I love it. Docile animals get no love in the sports world. Its always aggressive, predatory animals like Cougars, Lions, Sharks, etc. I want to see more Chickens, Rabbits, Snails, etc..
