Also, this could simply be a ploy by his wife to get more money and to stick a dagger in as they get divorced. She did cheat on him, which I assume put's her gold-digging in a bit of danger. Divorce law needs to change.

Pretty sure it's so she'd get custody of the kid/kids, which leads to much more money. I'm sure an absentee, athlete would already have a hard time getting custody. Then add swirling gay rumors to the mix.
