This. Lebron is no different than any other superstar with average man defense but a high enough IQ to play good team ball (IE, a Larry Bird or an Oscar Robertson). He's a great player, so he knows how to play the game on both ends. But by no means is he some sort of relentless savage and ball hawk on the defensive like a Jerry West, Bill Russell, Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen were. Lebron is a serviceable defender under the right system. 1 on 1 he gets exposed every time by any half-way decent offensive player. His athletic looking 'chase-down blocks' from a few years back vastly overrated his stock as a defender.

Honestly, LeBron's on-ball defense is solid.

During the '11 ECF, dude held Rose to 6.3% shooting in 4th quarters
Held Melo to 38% in the 2012 playoffs (54% against Battier)

I'd say his awareness when it comes to rotating and being in the right spot and ability to create turnovers (transition from defense to offense) is where he really makes his impact.
