Coming across as too eager and desperate doesn't have much to do with how long you wait, but with the amount of effort you put in. You can send a text but make sure you keep a low profile until she shows interest in you. Like Kobesfinger said, if your only reason for sending a text is to say hi don't do it, have something to talk about first and ease into that conversation rather than jump right in. Also don't give her any compliments until prompted by her to give one.
