Re: Magic Johnson Talks About Jim Buss
Jimmy Buss needs to stop being like Jerry Jones of Cowboys. Look at the blunders he has made to try to run the Cowboys the way HE wants. Jimmy will make the Lakers the same sort of laughingstock that the Cowboys have become the last 16 years thanks to Jerry's massive ego.
edit: Sorry, I wanted to clarify something. Our Lakers are already a laughingstock in the NBA. I said they will become one, but we already are. Fans of other team laugh at us, and if this continues, they will eventually spit on us. It is a frustrating time to be a Laker fan with Kobe's last couple years going down rebuilding while led by the great wise Mike D Antoni.

Exactly, in any sport the owner can't be making decisions regarding who is on the teams roster. Let the people who know the sport do that. The owner should have a say in the financials and that's it.

That would be great if owners did that but unfortunately they don't leave it to those who specialise in those areas, because some of them happen to be giant egotists and borderline suffering from narcissistic personality disorder or just plain stupidity , Jim Buss with his desire when he took over to basically not hire Shaw because he wanted to start a "new era" basically getting basically restarting from what Phil had done, then 2 years later brings Rambis back as an assistant anyway, should have just hired Shaw to start with instead of Brown then D'Antoni, owners should be like the Queen of England figureheads with potential power but don't use it and leave it to those qualified to.

It has to be "their way" my way or the highway attitude unfortunately that's what Jim comes across as to me, very arrogant and stubborn (maybe why he hired D'Antoni they are so similar arrogant and stubborn), desperate to live up to daddy's image or daddy's legacy but by doing things his way almost trying in a way to out do Jerry (yeah you're not going to just about ever so just butt out please and leave it to those trained in management)

I read from a book written by Pat Riley that Dr Buss REALLY wanted to trade Worthy for Mark Aguirre. Riley and West pleaded with Jerry not to do it and eventually he relented but not before saying that next time, he'll make the final decision. I think he said that bec he felt offended that the 2 icons disagreed with him.

Wow, that would've really changed around history and titles. The Pistons needed him to win, and if the Lakers lost Worthy they wouldn't have won. Was the trade going to be with the Mavericks or Pistons? Either way it would have been a huge loss for the Lakers, even though Aguirre is good.

Back when Aguirre was with the Mavs. I was just backing up somebody's point about Jerry listening to smart poeple. Hiring the best available staff like West etc....
I dont have the facts but it also seemed to me that Buss was the one who hired Phil and that West was hesitant/lukewarm to the idea.

Jerry West also wanted to draft Sidney Moncrief over Magic Johnson in 1979. Read it in Jerry West's book.
He felt he had a PG in Norm Nixon and needed a 2 guard. And Moncrief was a monster
But Jerry Buss was adamant that if Magic wasn't the #1 overall pick, he wouldn't buy the team. Thus Earvin became a Laker.
Buss would relent and let the GM make his moves, but I do want to point out he did know what he wanted and went after it

Re: Magic Johnson Talks About Jim Buss
^ I guess you can argue that Buss wanted Magic for the sheer thrills he would have brought, and that's what he was going for. He wanted the Lakers to become a fast, exciting team. He may have gotten extremely lucky or he could have been truly brilliant.
Either way, I got my fingers crossed the Lakers will put on their big boy pants and get shit done. I got to watch 5 titles since I have fallen madly in love with bball, and now I'm hooked. I need MOOOOAAARRRRR
