Re: World Population Clock
People are really suggesting that the Government step in???
That seems potentially dangerous to me. The best way to solve the problem if one exists is economic development but many of these 3rd world nations are poorly managed. Also if it really does bother you that much than look at your everyday choices that impact those nations and attempt to make the necessary change. Relying on the Government imo would lead to a host of new other problems.

Even with the one child policy, china's population has not yet stabilized.
1) People are living longer than ever before and while one-child policy is in effect, population does not instantly start to stabilize due to decreasing death rate. It would take generations to be effective with current massive population
2) Exceptions are made: "Rural families can have a second child if the first child is a girl or is disabled, and ethnic minorities are exempt. Families in which neither parent has siblings are also allowed to have two children. Residents of the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, and foreigners living in China are also exempt from the policy. In 2007, approximately 35.9% of China's population was subject to a one-child restriction." [wiki]
3) Tons of Chinese have yet to marry. If more Chinese start to marry, it would create population growth. That growth generation will grow up and they will marry, have their own child - thus continuing the trend. Check out age distribution trend (will stabilize in 2050): http://www.nationmaster.com/country/ch/Age_distribution
So yes, China has as much to do with the trend as any other nation like India. Only difference is China is enforcing one-child policy more and more so they will eventually stabilize around ~2050-2060. Remember, stabilize just means it will stop growing. It won't stop shrinking until maybe another decade or 2 after that when the older people start to die.

Well honestly having children is a responsibility, a burden or a blessing to a society. People shouldn't be allowed to just have as many children as they want because it affects so many other people.
I think 2 children per married couple is fair. There should be heavy financial penalties to having a child when you are not married, having 3+ children etc. Honestly though....it's tough to morally enforce. Also, a lot of the people breaking these laws will be the "gangsta" types who just refuse to adhere to common sense like using condoms or bc.
Actually, we do already have a form of this punishment lol. It's called child support lol. Children are mad expensive to have. Seems to be big enough of a deterrent for a reasonable amount of people.
