Re: Check out this wonderkid that makes us all look dumb
Not to take anything away from a 6 year old and i really hope he continues doing everything he does with such enthusiasm and passion he has shown on the show, but honestly if you are interested in a subject you are going to know a lot of, in this day and age essentially useless, facts about it. Most of us here probably know the career history of like 400 basketball players and not to compare fully grown men to 6 year olds but its not a very complex process to memorize facts.
But anyway props to the kid, love seeing him on the show.

True. This is all memorization. This is the same thing as memorizing a bunch of vocabularies.
True genius is in conceptual understanding: the ability to see the overall picture, to fully understand an idea and then take it one step further.
You know a person is smart when they say something you have never thought of before. As is, a kid memorizing a bunch of vocabs isn't that all impressive.

Part of being able to think abstractly with purpose is having a really good understanding of a lot of things though. Everything a person memorizes really well is like adding another tool to the arsenal. Is it necessary? That's arguable, but it can't hurt. I think dedication is a better word though... It's no different to me than a kid spending a ton of time playing basketball and being better than everyone. You see that sort of thing all the time where someone is a phenom when they are younger because they are obsessed, then they get older and they lose some interest or people catch up and they aren't as special anymore. Everyone plateaus.

Yea but memorization doesn't create passion for learning. The best kind of learning is the kind that exercises your creativity and imagination. As is, rote memorization is boring, lazy, and repetitive.
Now if the kid actually used those elements to come up with something completely new, that would be impressive. Memorizing the periodic table isn't impressive at all.
