    Default Disgruntled employee shot CEO

    12:25 PM EDT

CHICAGO - An apparent disgruntled employee shot his boss in a downtown Chicago high-rise on Thursday before taking his own life.

Officers were called to the Bank of America building in the city's bustling financial district around 9:50 a.m. Two men were found on the floor in an office.

Police said a 54-year-old victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A 59-year-old man described as the offender was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said the shooting took place on the 17th floor. A tech company on that floor had recently undergone downsizing. Some of its employees had been demoted.

One of those employees, McCarthy said, came into the office shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday and demanded a one-on-one meeting with the CEO.

During that meeting, the employee pulled out a gun, McCarthy said.

The employee and the CEO struggled for the gun. The CEO was shot twice, once in the head and once in the stomach.

The gunman then took his own life, McCarthy said.

The building where the shooting took place is two blocks from the Willis Tower, the country's second tallest skyscraper, and a block away from the Chicago Board of Trade building and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

The gunman was a recently demoted executive.

Police responded to shots fired at 9:50 a.m. at 231 S. LaSalle, listed as the old Bank of America Trade Operations Building.

They found a 54-year-old victim, identified as ArrowStream CEO Steven LaVoie, injured with a gunshot wound to his stomach and his head and the 59-year-old gunman deceased with a gunshot wound to the head.

According to a profile on arrowstream.com, LaVoie founded the company, which provides supply chain management solutions for the food service industry, in 2000.

The victim is in "grave condition." The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"What we have here is a workplace violence issue," McCarthy told reporters. "Apparently there's a technological company on the 17th floor. They've been undergoing a downsizing. They've demoted a number of people."

The incident is being investigated as a possible murder-suicide incident, according to police.

Fire crews arriving to the scene initially were warned that a suspect was still on the floor and still armed, according to radio reports.

Police said the scene was contained at about 10:40 a.m. There was only one gunman involved.

Nearby Ann Taylor and Jos. A. Bank stores locked their doors after reports of the shooting.

Jessica Cazares, who works at nearby Caffe Baci, said she witnessed a chaotic scene outside the building.

"There were people running, afraid," she said, "but we thought it was a movie filming. This time it was a real situation.
    "

Tiffany Baggett, a woman who works in the building, said an alarm went off in the building and everyone was told to stay on their floor of the building. Employees moved to a safer area, she said, away from the glass doors.

"I was just informed as an employee there was a shooting, so we just evacuated our reception area as quickly as possible," Baggett said.

Pedestrians were being held across the street as detectives and police entered the building.

    Wow

Don't understand it though. The guy was 59 and just spent his entire life working. Are you really going to go batshit crazy about your job like that? I understand it was his "career" and he put his whole life into that but still. Tells me that his career was his life. Probably had a nice salary, potentially alot of $$ saved up in the bank, why not just live out the rest of your life on some nice beach or w/e.

might've been pissed off about his hand in the company's success. he was reportedly there from the beginning.

Tony DeFrances was ArrowStream’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO). DeFrances had been demoted on July 25, due ArrowStream’s period of downsizing.

The former CTO had been with ArrowStream since the company was formed by LaVoie back in 2000. According to an online profile, in his role at the company:

DeFrances has brought the vision of total supply chain connectivity and collaboration to life through technology. In developing ArrowStream’s proprietary supply chain technology, he has enabled foodservice and grocery trading partners to achieve an unprecedented level of synchronization and information sharing that delivers measurable cost savings and revenue generating opportunities.

The results of DeFrances’ development have helped to facilitate ArrowStream’s continued profitability, including a 65 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the last three years and over $85M in revenue in 2008.

DeFrances was a graduate of the University of Dayton where he has masters in computer science and experimental psychology.

He was married to his wife Eileen, the couple had three children and lived in the Chicago area.

Steven LaVoie remains in critical condition in hospital.
When you are the creator of the technology that made your company successful, and devoted the prime of your adult life developing and perfecting it, you don't just say, oh c'est la vie. Sad but some people just can't handle that kind of blow and remain stable.

"According to an online profile" makes it sound like the reporter looked at his LinkedIN profile......and basically quoted this guys resume, which is not going to be an unbiased source.
