The media moves on once a player moves on. Kobe was elite until 2012, with some dips from 2008 or so.

He has barely played ball the last couple years, of course the media isn't going to focus on him.

LeBron pretty much became on par with Kobe in terms of media attention during 2010 playoffs. That Quit Game in the 2nd Round vs Celtics was the talk of the playoffs until the Finals(Boston vs LAL) came.

Then just two months later, LBJ made his infamous "Decision" and he's been the biggest media topic in the NBA ever since.
