As of 1990, I think the top six GOAT players u could say were Kareem, Wilt, Russ, Magic, Bird, and Big O. So I would have Big O sixth. And Magic arguably as high as number three.

^ Something like that. I don't recall Oscar being mentioned a lot back in the late 80s. The NBA seemed to be heavy into marketing the newer stars. But I'd guess Oscar was top 6 at the time by knowledgeable fans. I wonder what Dr J was, though. He was fresher in everyone's memory.

I agree! I think a top 10 GOAT in 1990 could have included any of these twelve legends:

    Kareem
    Wilt
    Russell
    Magic
    Bird
    Big O
    West
    Dr. J
    Hondo
    Baylor
    Barry
    Moses

But if u include Doc's ABA years, I ACTUALLY think u argue Doc in the top five GOAT in 1990. Even to this day if u count Doc's ABA years he's still arguably the GOAT SF. So in terms of NBA, Bird and Bron are the top two GOAT. But in PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL history, I think Doc has a great case as the GOAT SF!

This is the closest thing I've found to an answer. The page lists other NBA All time Anniversary teams.

    RED HOLZMAN'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY NBA ALL-TIME TEAM [1986]

    F Elgin Baylor 1958-1972
    F Larry Bird 1979-1986
    F Julius Erving 1976-1986
    F Bob Pettit 1954-1965
    C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1969-1986
    C Wilt Chamberlain 1959-1973
    C George Mikan 1946-1956
    C Bill Russell 1956-1969
    G Walt Frazier 1967-1980
    G John Havlicek 1962-1986
    G Oscar Robertson 1960-1974
    G Jerry West 1960-1974
    Red Auerbach, Coach 1946-1966

    Link

    Edit:
This article from 1986 states that Oscar Robertson was 2nd all time as voted on by a panel of 60 "experts".

    Another edit:
I believe the information below was done by an ISH poster named WillC:

In 1988 Oscar Robertson was ranked 5th according to Basketball's 100 Greatest Players by Wayne Patterson.

In 1993 Oscar Robertson was ranked 1st according to Pro Basketball Statistics by Martin Taragano, 1993.

Tharegul8r provided a list of quotes from roughly 1987-1995 in this post with some people calling Magic the greatest ever.

So, it's obvious that there never was any consensus other than maybe both being considered top 10 by the time Magic retired in 1991.
