Freud thought girls:
Soon after the libidinal shift to the *****, the child develops her first sexual impulses towards her mother.
The girl realizes that she is not physically equipped to have a heterosexual relationship with her mother, since she does not have a *****.
She desires a *****, and the power that it represents. This is described as ***** envy. She sees the solution as obtaining her father's *****.
She develops a sexual desire for her father.
The girl blames her mother for her apparent castration (what she sees as punishment by the mother for being attracted to the father) assisting a shift in the focus of her sexual impulses from her mother to her father.
Sexual desire for her father leads to the desire to replace and eliminate her mother.
The girl identifies with her mother so that she might learn to mimic her, and thus replace her.
The child anticipates that both aforementioned desires will incur punishment (by the principle of lex talionis).
The girl employs the defence mechanism of displacement to shift the object of her sexual desires from her father to men in general.

A humble prophet
Re: Pennis envy
He was very wrong, and Western culture has paid the price for listening to Freudian drivel the last century or so.
This is not to say that he didn't have some useful and interesting things to say, just that he made his fame by repackaging already existing ideas in a crude and systemised why that even American housewives could understand. He sold introspective self-indulgence to an American population that was already indulgent and self-obsessed enough.
He was sort of in the right place at the right time (his lectures in 1909 laid the germ). His ideas that are valid aren't particularly groundbreaking, and the only ones that would be groundbreaking are utterly fantastical.

Re: Pennis envy
Freud was right on some things... so very very fcking wrong on others (Ophelia complex much on all of his writings)...
He was an semi-capable intellectual during the 20th century, a lot of his findings have been dis-proven by the sociology and psychology establishment and it's crazy people still look him up when wondering about healthy sexual thoughts.

Re: Pennis envy
I may argue, that the power shift after the basis in which a child having the perspective that their parents remain perfect in all aspects of environment(work, family, etc) could cause the beginning of a sexual power struggle.
The opposite of honesty from a parent to their children at an early age, could re-program in which scenarios of "apparent castration" due to attraction.
Which may re-title the term ***** envy.
But, I actually dont know much, if anything, about psycology. period.
