I'm not a boxing expert but it comes off as a cheap tactic to ruin the momentum of the other fighter.
Watching the fight yesterday it was painful to see Mayweather clinch early on. To me it's similar to grabbing a player in soccer or basketball when you are getting beat or need a breather. Points should be deducted for it.

It's more akin to a shoulder charge in football. Perfectly legal, within certain limits. And if you want to be a good defensive fullback that better be a well developed part of your skill-set.
If Manny has bad footwork and doesn't know how to counter a clinch, a smart opponent is going to use that to his advantage. Clinching can be punished too, it's not a infallible technique.

Obviously, like asking why boxing allows clinching is silly.

the real question I have now that I'm a tad more informed is this:
why doesn't professional boxing deduct points for clinching like amateur boxing does?
still have yet to see a good answer for this.

Gloves are alright, they just need to inject some mercury in them.

I remember watching a couple of old Ali fights, he used to clinch quite a lot as well. Rumble in the Jungle against Foreman I remember quite well

They expect professionals to have the footwork and ring savvy to avoid them perhaps?

In this fight for sure. If you have watched his other fights and this one you would question whatever training and planning Roach had for the match up. Footwork was awful and he respected the jab far too much which led to him being tentative and over thinking. He let Mayweather dictate the fight. When Manny just reacted and let his hands go then he had success. I blame the ghost of JMM. Manny didn't want to get knocked out from a counter after he felt the accurate punching from Floyd. I think prior to the knockout loss Manny would have accepted some punishment and let his hands go.

Floyd clinches = cheater
Ali clinches = greatest
Sugar Ray Leonard moves around ring = greatest
Floyd moves around the rind = runner
Is that it?

I'm re-watching the fight and I am amazed at how easily Manny allowed himself to get tied up. Mayweather practically telegraphed some of these. Manny could have slipped to the side with better foot work and letting his hands go.

Are people this stupid to not understand the real reason why people hate Mayweather while liking other all time greats? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the fighters mentioned above were just more appealing and interesting public figures. Floyd doesn't have one redeeming quality as an individual in the limelight. If dude could read, was smart, funny, or stood for something politically people might respect dude.
As for the clinch, I hate it too. If you want to wrestle join the UFC.
