Looks like shit because you have to trim the front so they can grow out evenly or else you are going to get that ugly growing out look.

Isn't that a prerequisite anyway? Agreed, he might look like a giant douche, but I would probably look like a giant douche to many people if the whole world was going to judge, so who cares if you can pull off the look?

My experience has been trim/fade the sides/neckline and let the front (entire goatee area) grow a bit longer - longest part being the stache.

Like, how a good fade haircut with it longer on the top looks good I've noticed at least on me a faded beard looks best. Everyone's different though.
