Default Here's why it's suboptimal for frontcourt players to dominate the ball

frontcourt players are supposed to have high assisted rates - the starting frontcourts of almost every single team have assisted rates of well over 50% - that's standard for all frontcourt positions, as they are a major source of assists for any team.

but if a normally high-assisted frontcourt position is occupied by a player with a low assisted rate like a ball-dominator, teammates won't be able to assist as often to the frontcourt.. Their assisting capacity can be lowered quite significantly, especially if that frontcourt player is the team's leading scorer - it's suboptimal if the team's leading scorer is ball-dominant - it means his teammates don't dime often to the team's leading scorer.

With teammates not assisting, playmaking or being engaged as much because they can't dime to one of their frontcourt guys, they routinely "underperform" and the team underachieves.

Otoh, off-ball players are assisted much more often, which increases assists for the team and increases teammates' playmaking capacity - off-ball scorers engage teammates and pad THEIR assist totals.. Otoh, ball-dominance zaps teammates of their assist and playmaking potential and leads to routine underperformance.

You need elite defense and rim protection from your frontcourt. That is more of a priority than ball handling / assists / even scoring.

Essentially, MJ's off-ball game and high assisted rate gave teammates more capacity to assist - his off-ball scoring padded THEIR assist totals and kept them more engaged.

Otoh, Lebron's ball-dominance and lower assisted rate lessens the capacity of teammates to assist and playmake, which leads to routine underperformance (and Lebron having to blame teammates for his own game's shortcomings).
