I was so pumped when Hinkie and Brown were saying that Embiid was going to be ready for a full summer league, now that this seems unlikely it's a huge blow. This board seems to have pretty polar sentiments about Embiid/Sixers in general, but those of you making fun of a promising young player's injuries need to seriously reevaluate yourselves

    Via Tony Wroten:

Just got off the phone with my bro and he said he can't wait until next season. He turning up.
Hoping that Embiid is gonna heal up, for his sake and for all of us to have a chance to see just how dominant he can be.

I think he's gonna be fine.

The key words 76ers CEO O'Neil used were "long term health" and "he didn't re-injury" his foot. it's just that "he's not healing at the expected pace". That could mean almost anything. Your foot is 98% healed, but it's still not at the "expected pace", so we'll announce to the world that we're resting you for now and re-evaluating. It's vague and a little fishy.

He's been playing intense 3-3 ball and he was "dominating" and not feeling any pain. Now, comes this news where the 76ers are looking at his long term health, and they say there will be news in a "couple of weeks". How convenient that this will be right after the draft.

Could the 76ers be deliberately using and framing this issue in such a way as to create confusion and uncertainty over their no.3 pick?

You know the answer to that.

Great , 2 years off is too much even for a tanking team. Let him get his experience

if Embiid and D'Angelo/Emmanuel are the real deal the sixers don't need to tank for a top 3 pick to be competitive in the future, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

    imagine

    D'Angelo Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay
    Jaylen Brown
    Nerlens Noel / Dario Saric
    Joel Embiid

shit. add a solid couple veterans to that squad and they could go far early in their careers.

Regarding Saric- if comes over in summer 2017 then he will do the exact same thing Mirotic pulled. People don't realize pre-tax his contract is at least comparable to #1 pick type money. He can stand to make tens of millions more guaranteed if he waits 2 additional years to make the jump. He's also playing for a title in Turkey, as opposed to losing huge for the 76ers.

I also think the 76ers rebuilding strategy is oddly endearing and humorous lol. I'd honestly run a team very similarly in terms of trying to get top draft picks and hoarding cap space. In a way, I think it'd be hilarious if Hinkie builds a superteam and all other GMs eat crow for bashing him for several seasons.
I think Embiid is in LA, and he bumped into him in LA.

I know the answer to that and it's no. They aren't doing that. They did this press release because it was about to be leaked and they wanted to be on top of it and ahead of the leak. It's going to be a "couple of weeks" because they are flying in every top specialist that they can find on this. They are going outside the circle of the doctors who they have been using up until now because of this setback and they are trying to determine their best course of action from here. Hinkie doesn't draft for position or need he's always going to take the best player available or make the best deal available. There's no chance this is a smokescreen for the draft. Zero. They aren't going to use Joel Embiid's health as some type of ploy, there's no way that's happening. Scott O'Neill's wording is vague and fishy but not in the sense that they're floating some bullshit out there before the draft, it's fishy in the sense that they don't know what's going on yet and probably think that he'll need another surgery but they of course aren't going to speculate to the press or say anything more than what they've said until after they have all the information possible.

This whole thing worries me. This possibility was there the whole time since they picked him. They picked him when he was damaged goods. That's why he fell to them. My guess is that he'll need another surgery. That's my guess.

    You are always so pessimistic.

At the end of the day, no one knows what the heck is goin on, but you used the word "setback" and there hasn't been a setback. O'Neil reiterated that he didn't re-injure his foot, and he's feeling no pain.

To me, the clue in all this is O'Neil's use of the words "long term health". They're trying to make sure that even if he's feeling fine right now, they're still looking at him playing a long career with minimal injury.

I don't think he will require surgery, and neither of us is qualified to give a valid opinion on this. I just don't get how they could allow Embiid to be having intense work outs without making sure he has fully healed. That just doesn't make sense.

The whole thing is ambiguous and maybe it is deliberate because if it isn't, then some people in the front office may have to pay for it with their wrong decisions that could be catastrophic for this franchise.

No one is going to pay for anything, it's part of drafting an injured player. They have been cautious every step of the way and I don't think that there have been any wrong decisions. The problem is his foot not the decisions made about the foot. Yes it's a "setback" because he's not on schedule and as of now they don't understand why it's not healing. There may be no pain and no new injury but if the bone isn't healing and they don't know why, then that's a setback. It was announced in May that he would be playing summer league and there's virtually no chance of him playing summer league now. That's a setback to me. There's nothing deliberate about this. The story was going to be leaked so the Sixers released a press report.

I'm guessing that he'll need another surgery but that's just my opinion and it's based on nothing other than my opinion. It's not valid it's just what I think. It's hard for me to feel good about the bone in the foot of a seven footer not being healed this long after surgery.

Of course they are concerned about his long term health as they were with Noel's and didn't allow him to play for a whole season when he more than likely could have in order to be as conservative as possible with him. They have taken the same approach with Embiid the problem is that his foot isn't responding as they had hoped or expected.

Hey Tony. This is Hinkie. We traded you for a future 2nd round pick. Pack your bags. I bet you feel like a mormon now.

Hey. No need to call me a moron.

No you are going to Utah.

    Moron is fine.

I actually support them. I hate that we have a league that makes this strategy smart, but can't fault them for what they've done.

fully concurred ... any suggestions for alternatives?

I for 1 do not have any ideas on how you'd fix that ... its way hard to eradicate such a practice IMO

First of all, I know you're being extra conservative because you don't want to be disappointed. I know both of us want the best for the 76ers so it's all good.

Having said that, when the doctor and the 76ers cleared Embiid to go all out in intense 3 on 3 workouts, are you saying they weren't sure if his bone had fully healed? It's either his bone had fully healed at that point, and thus Joel being cleared, or they weren't sure, but cleared him anyway.

How can results show he was fully healed at one point, and then suddenly not fully healed later on at the pace they were expecting? This is what is so confusing, and doesn't make any sense.

This kind of confusion actually should require a full blown press conference with lots of questions to see if anyone at all is liable for wrong decisions. It might not be anyone in the front office, and it might even be his doctors. We don't know. That's my point about accountability.

The fact that there hasn't been a real press conference with Hinkie, with maybe a doctor or two, should give us a clue on their motives. No, we will get results in a "couple of weeks" after the draft. I'm sure that's not a coincidence.LOL

My personal view is there were no bad decisions made, and they(the FO) are framing this issue in a way that they could use for draft purposes. I'm not saying this is a full blown hoax. I believe there's something to this "injury" or "setback" or whatever you want to call it, but it's not nearly as bad as it may look, and after the draft they will probably announce that he's fine after further study from doctors.

When O'Neil was asked to rule out Embiid for Summer League, he couldn't even rule it out. If it was really bad, don't you think that's the immediate reaction of the franchise protecting it's crown jewel?

No, I do not think it was fully healed when cleared for three on three that's why he was only playing three on three not five on five. I would assume that during stages of healing they targeted certain activities. When it got to whichever stage, three on three was one of the activities for that stage.

As far as what O'Neill said, I would expect him to say as much at this point but the writing is on the wall. He's in a boot and if it's healing slower than anticipated then I'm pretty sure it's safe to say he won't be playing summer league. They aren't going to make a statement about any part of his future until he's looked at by the other doctors, so Scott O'Neill said nothing that I didn't expect him to say.
