Wow, the largest of the diamonds they cut out of that was 530.4 carats only 1/6th of the original.

There's no point. Prestige? Social standing? The ability to show it off? They sure as hell aren't that rare and are insanely overpriced.

same point as any other precious gem/metal...rare collectables, valuable works of art, etc

what is crazy is that there are so many diamonds out there that they should be worthless but the flow is controled to a drip to keep them expensive

This is true. It's actually illegal for companies like de beers to operate in the United States due to the anti trust laws.

Diamonds are actually not all that rare. Gems like ruby are like 70 times rarer than diamonds, but are less expensive. The entire diamond trade is rigged. They restrict the amount of diamonds they sell to give it the illusion of being rare, which drives up the price.
