    Basketball didn't really become a legitimate thing until this century. The league wasn't as big. Top players were just happy to be in the league rather than compete for excellence. Players often held down other jobs to make ends meet. Michael Jordan (one of the top players in his era) worked on the side as a shoe salesman. In fact that's where he made most of his money.
