The only reason this is even an issue is because the US doesn't want china to gain more resources and territory, so it's backing all the little Asian countries. Vietnam and South Korea wouldn't dare to oppose China if they didn't have strong and explicit US backing.

from what i've read, that's just one of several ideas the current regime is trying to push that is in fact pretty much just propaganda.

even so, it's still mostly irrelevant.

as in-- if you have a group of nations sharing a sea space for many decades, with all the corresponding rights and laws that support that, then trying to bully your way in to exclusive ownership is obviously going to create problems no matter what your excuse is.
