Steals are a slippery slope to boast about as they don't necessarily indicate great defense more great timing on gambling about defense - you're actually out of position most of the time defending a passing lane not a player in order to get a steal and there's no stat to indicate how many times you got burned or gave up points to get those steals.

That said

Jerry West would most certainly be on this leaderboard somewhere had the stat been around for him
