I just started playing piano and I've been listening to a ton of Bill Evans. He's absolutely incredible, check out "Portrait in Jazz".

You have my respect for leading off the OP with Cannonball Adderly. He was my favorite soloist who played with Miles... not as brave as Coltrane, but more melodic

Check out Herbie Hancock "Man-Child". You'll recognize the opening track from sports games but it's all just great jazz-funk fusion

I'm also a fan of Sly and the Family Stone... I would call them soul, but they're hard to pin down

    Also try The Budos Band

"Adeniji" and "Chicago Falcon" are the songs I'd reccommend. They're an instrumental funk group.

I always wish I got more into Jazz. I enjoy some of it, but don't listen to it enough.

I listen to soul and funk on a regular, specially soul music. Listen to soul every other day it seems.

Kenny G is not jazz, r&b, soul, funk, or blues. That's elevator music.

Just so you know, most people who play jazz music consider "smooth jazz" to be a joke and scoff at it.

Not that it means anything. If you like it, you like it. I like some of it. But it's kind of a misnomer for it to be called jazz.

Pretty sure hardcore narco addicts like their crack a bit purer as well. They can even tell the level of purity in their shit by just sniffing...

Only listened to the first recommendation so far and absolutely loving it. I have a feeling I'm going to be up a lot longer than I expected diving into his work haha, thanks for the recommendation!

How'd you get into soul and funk? My dad was a junkie of classic rock and blues, while my mom was eclectic in her taste, since she went to Orr highschool in Chicago which was like 99% black she was influenced to listen to it. I'll never forget the look of my drivers ed teachers face when I mentioned she went there when he asked, eyes got wide and he then asked "Uhhh is your mom black?" lmao.

It was kinda like the look I got from a black family when I was young for rocking a FUBU sweater at a food drive

Soul music was always around me since I can remember. From Delfonics, Manhattans, Stevie and of course the Motown and Philadelphia sound of the 60s. Mexicans always enjoyed soul music in the States. And I grew up in a mixed neighborhood 50% black 50% Mexican. So I heard it everywhere all the time, it was as normal as kids listening to Cardi B or Ariana Grande today.

I got into funk later in high school (90s). Some of my friends were bboys and many breaks came from old funk records. Naturally, growing up in LA funk was everywhere in the 80s, from Parliament to Zapp and Roger. I grew up on
