I wonder if a lot of animals go through similar fate. Injured, hurt, and alive for weeks before finally dying.

if you let a bear get up in your grill, you're dead.

Wouldn't a double barrell shotgun be more effective? Stopping power for when that death machine gets close enough to try and maul you?
You will never catch me out camping in the woods in bear country, fukk that.

at the effective distance of a shotgun, yeah, it will pack a hell of a lot more punch against a big ass bear. ar15's have small bullets in comparison but you can reach a lot farther and shoot quicker too. 30 bullet magazines are a plus, no guarantee the shotgun will stop the bear so having to reload vs 30 bullet mag can make a difference.

One of the neighbors next to my parent's hunting cabin caught a black bear in his chicken coop. "Pumped a magazine into it" with his AR-15. Thing still managed to lumber off before tumbling down a ridge all the way to the bottom where it died. Made a rug and lots of stew meat out of it. Yes he was poacher of bear, deer and elk. Went to prison for something, his wife left him, lost his property and died in prison from a heart attack. Would make a hell of a country song.
