    Barkley hurt his back in early 1994 and was not the same player on a consistent basis afterwards.

    There was two phases to Barkley's time in Phoenix. Pre back injury and post back injury.

    Pre injury he averaged 25.3 / 12.2 / 5.1 / 1.7 / 0.9 and led the suns to an 83-21 record. This Barkley had the smarts you're talking about as well as most of his Philly athleticism. During this time, he still was the best player in the world not name michael jordan.

    Post back injury, he showed that he still had it at times.. (33ppg over first 5 games of 94 POs, 47 point game in 95 POs etc.) But he couldn't sustain it, having more frequent off nights and fading before getting too deep into the playoffs. He spent half times getting pain killing injections in the WCSFs in 94 and 95.

    True he one said that his punishing style of play some day would take its tole on his body. Free injury Sir Charles was something amazing to watch.
