It's possible European diseases weren't solely responsible for killing off the native
...populations in the Americas.
It's very possible an indigenous viral hemorrhagic fever(similar to Ebola)known as cocoliztli was the primary culprit. This would make sense since something wiped out the Maya before the Europeans arrived. The Maya were not only by far the most advanced civilization in the Americas, one could make a case for the entire world in some fields of mathematics and astrology.
Another interesting factoid, is that smallpox was determined to have only a 40% mortality rate among the Mexican/Central American natives. So it wasn't smallpox alone that did all the damage. Oddly enough smallpox was much more deadly among North American Indians(55%-100% mortality rate depending on tribe). This might be because the Europeans taught the natives the treatment of variolation to fight it off.
The article does state the European rats may have been the vector that allowed this disease to travel much easier and cause much more damage though.

Not disputing the disease portion of this post, it’s an interesting study.
But this, brother:

The America’s before Europeans (Spaniards, Portuguese) showed up? Sure, no debate there.
But ENTIRE WORLD ?????? Naaaaaaaaaah.
Arabs & Persians invented Astrolabes and named all the stars before 1000AD. While the Maya were literally murdering people on top of ziggurats DAILY, in fear of the sun not rising again the following day if they didn’t.
Their contributions to math and science are all drastically overstated. They were a primitive barbaric culture who only built large structures, by use of forced slave exploitation from their own population.

As we can see from this pandemic, a virus has no boundries and is not exclusive to a race. We don't have the data to know where these plagues originated from do we?
