Why are there still tigers around if there are house cats? You can ask this about many animals.

Our heads should be getting bigger. I read somewhere that since we have information at our fingertips now and we are generally smarter than our ancestors, our brains will evolve and grow larger to be able to handle the wealth of knowledge. So we should end up looking like bobble heads fairly soon.

Just imagine the border between forest and grassland as similar to the border between water and land.

Every so often a creature will be adapted to move slightly further out from the forest or the water. Because it can traverse both, it will survive at higher rates. Some of its offspring will remain suited to the initial habitat, while some offspring will find security spending more time in the new habitat.

Over time, those amphibians spending more time on land, or those apes spending more time on the plains, will mate together and produce a divergent species. While the offspring that was best suited to the water or the jungle will stay there and will have remained fish and apes. A monkey is still better suited to jungle environments than a human, so it wouldnt make sense for all monkeys to evolve into humans. In jungle habitats, monkeys will be better adapted. But in terms of expanding outward, new adaptations will prevail.

The reason monkeys arent still evolving today is obvious. Humans are already proliferated in the areas surrounding natural monkey habitats. A slightly evolved monkey cant leave the jungle any longer, because it would be impossible to compete with the established humans.
