Default Grant Hill would get criticize in today's nba for lack of team success in the playof

Grant Hill was one of the most popular players during his prime due to the Sprite, and Fila Commercials. But He was the original 2nd round Virgin. He only made it to the the 2nd round and beyond when he played for Steve Nash's Phoenix Suns. He even missed the playoffs in Detroit at the Peak of his popularity. Unlike Tracy Mcgrady he never put up quality numbers in the first round of the playoffs. He's the Anti Penny Hardaway. Even Playoffs Penny won a playoffs series, and put up quality numbers in the post season after Shaq signed with the Lakers.

And his team lost twice to the Steve Smith, Dikembe, Mutombo and Laetnerr's Hawks despite having a home court advantage. The only great team they faced in the playoffs were the 1996 Orlando Magic. I don't undertand why Pippen haters thought Hill was the best small forward in the 1990's.

Probably because the era was so tough and his team wasn't good. They won 46 and 54 in a stacked conference, with a well-past his prime version of Joe Dumars as his second best player.

The year they won 54 they were the 5th seed and lost 3-2 to an Atlanta team that fell 1 game behind the Knicks the last game of the season.

Not saying Hill is better than James, but thru his first 3 years he was, and he had no one to team up with. Main reason he went to Orlando. If McGrady continues same trajectory but alongside healthy Hill? That's one of the greatest duos ever.

Talent-wise, Hill's better than Pippen, but his lack of Playoff success makes it a pointless argument, Pippen fans are always going to talk about the post-season, though Pippen's only Playoff series win as the #1 guy was against a mediocre Cavs squad that lost Brad Daugherty and Larry Nance to career-ending injuries.

He benefits from the JFK effect, like Penny: they were tragically cut short in their primes so they get the benefit of every "what if" and no scrutiny for their shortcomings during their actual careers. No one asks why JFK couldn't get civil rights or Medicare anywhere in Congress and no one asks why Hill had zero team success (despite playing with Dumars and Houston) or why Orlando went down the tubes after Shaq left partly because Penny's efficiency nose-dived without Shaq. Etc.

Even Playoffs Penny won a playoffs series
Maybe later in his career not but not as Penny as Penny. Of course Penny had only one prime year without Shaq so we can't read too much into one year. Hill had six as the #1 option and did nothing in the playoffs. His teams weren't great in the RS either.

I don't undertand why Pippen haters thought Hill was the best small forward in the 1990's.
Hype and hate. Pippen put up similar offensive numbers but blows away Hill on defense. You don't even need team success to make the case for Pippen, although the difference there is stark.

If you notice in the thread you reference, once the numbers were posted they went silent. There is no rationality to their hate or their bad faith arguments.

It is the same reason they hype Worthy who had worse numbers than Pippen (not even getting to defense) and crashed and burned as a #1 option. Go on down the line and it's the same thing over and over. All due to insecurity about their hero.

What I don't understand about the Pippen thing is why are we talking about it?

    Irrelevant.
