Tag and trade him for a bunch of picks then.

This roster would have been nice on a rookie QB contract. The offensive supporting cast is already in place for the QB, and those picks plus all that money they wouldn't have to give Dak could have been used to build a good defense before the rookie QB deal is up.

Probably could have built the defense up as soon as this year considering you could have went out and got two big time starters with Daks cap hit.

The problem with this Cowboys team isn't Dak, he's a good QB. It's the fact they don't have a defense and probably can't build one unless they hit the jackpot in the draft like the Seahawks did in the Richard Sherman draft where you are getting HOF type players in the fifth round.

IMO they're better off with an expensive but promising QB and zero cap room to improve their shitty defense, versus having a shit QB and enough cap space to sign two or three high end defensive free agents.

Last season one the biggest issues believe it or not was the offensive line. Actually last season was a disaster from top to bottom pretty much, I really can't even think of anything positive, I guess CeeDee Lamb looks like the stud he is supposed to be, that's about it.

DeMarcus Lawrence is likely to be cut, if not cut it is a 100% certainty his contract will be restructured...he is $25m in cap space this coming year which is actually more than Dak will be.

The offensive line was hurt last year, they are presumably healthy to start this year.

I agree with that, of course Dalton isn't the answer.

But had they traded Dak to Carolina for example for the #8 and future first round and taken a guy like Justin Fields or Zach Wilson. Thats enticing.

What team is going to pay a bunch of picks for Dak? Its a buyers market. The Eagles couldn't even get a guaranteed first for Wentz.

its def possible that a trade like that works out in their favor, and it could ultimately put them over the top ... but its gotta be pretty damn hard to take that dive when you already have a young QB like Dak who has shown some flashes of greatness

Thats because the eagles destroyed Wentzs trade value

The Rams just traded away 2 firsts, a third, and Goff to get Matt Stafford... plenty of teams will give up a bunch of picks for a good QB

The Rams and the Colts are out of the bidding. The Panthers would be bidding against who by offering this year's #8? Dak would enter a trade market where teams like Bears and Raiders are in a holding pattern Watson or Wilson to become officially available.

They restructured the offensive line's contract (Smith, Martin, and Collins)

Cowboys offensive linemen Zack Martin, Tyron Smith and La'el Collins have agreed to restructure their contracts ahead of the 2021 season, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. The restructures will clear roughly $17 million in salary cap space.

I think D-Law would be on the chopping block next year if he doesn't give us double digit sacks.

    $20 million in cap space.

Although the salary cap limit is suppose to be lowered to $182.5 million so idk how much space we have.

    2022

    Dak Prescott QB $33,200,000 15.00 %
    DeMarcus Lawrence DE $27,000,000 12.20 %
    Amari Cooper WR $22,000,000 9.94 %

    La'el Collins RT $15,250,000 6.89 %
    Jaylon Smith ILB $11,800,000 5.33 %

$161 million, 73.85% of the cap.

Meanwhile the Pats got Cam for 14 mil and
About $6 million of the deal is tied to incentives

Give Cam all the weapons Dak has had plus 25 mil to spend on other players. https://giphy.com/gifs/nfl-newton-ca...UQIDkDJzRu6mzF

And what if he does prove himself? I'm assuming that the Cowboys worked him out and don't have any major concerns about his long-term health. If Dallas tags him in 2021 he counts 37.68 million against the cap, fully guaranteed. After the season, the Cowboys can either let him walk as an unrestricted free agent and get into bidding wars with every other team that thinks they're a QB away from being a contender, or they could franchise for the third season in a row. The cost of that third tag would be a little over $54 million. All fully guaranteed, and all counting directly against the 2022 cap.

Jerry Jones screwed up by not getting a deal in place with Dak after the 2019 season. He kept trying to "win" the negotiations by insisting on a five year deal, but Dak had all the leverage and wasn't going to budge off of four years. A deal signed after the 2019 season would have saved the Cowboys a few million.

The Patriots got Cam for that price because he had a terrible year in 2020. He finished 30th out of 33 eligible players in QBR, and that's a statistic that takes into account his running yards. He threw for 8 TDs and 10 interceptions. He was so ineffective that he was actually pulled in the middle of a few games and replaced with his backup. If you put him on the Cowboys he'd be better, sure. But not that much better. He's still not taking them to the playoffs unless the rest of the East is as pathetic as it was last season.

    This 100%

Jerry should have signed Dak a long time a ago....would have been a big deal at the time but overall would have been a much better deal for Dallas.
