Under the deal, the state would finance $600 million of the construction costs, while Erie County, where the stadium will be built, would cover $250 million. The remainder would be financed through a $200 million loan from the N.F.L. that was approved on Monday, plus $350 million from the team owners."

That's why having to pay taxes is immoral in the first place. If one of you went to your neighbor and tried to tax them, they would laugh. However, when government does it, it's OK. Doesn't make sense.

super bowl in buffalo would be rad if their new stadium didnt have a rectractable roof... why the hell are cold weather teams building indoor stadiums anyway? Cold weather is almost always a huge advantage for the home team, why on earth would you throw that advantage away? If the Bills were smart they would copy the team that owns their souls and build a stadium like Gillette - outdoor in the freezing cold with a weird cutout that creates unpredictable wind patterns at one end of the stadium... IMO all teams should be making their stadiums as quirky and unpredictable as possible (if they care about winning).

Its so incredibly stupid to build an indoor stadium in a cold climate, sure maybe your fans will be more comfortable, but fans dont show up to games to be comfortable, they show up to watch their team win. There are only 2 teams in the entire NFL that play indoors in a cold climate - the Lions and the Vikings, two of the most perpetually disappointing franchises in the entire NFL... while the other two teams in the division - Packers and Bears, have two of the most difficult stadiums to play in and are both among the most successful teams in NFL history.

Look at the patriots, not only do they play outdoors, but they made their stadium extra difficult to play in by cutting a slot in one of their endzones which creates all kinds of unpredictable wind patterns...

The Steelers play outdoors in the cold, the NY Giants play outdoors in the cold, the Broncos play outdoors in the cold... aside from the Cowboys, Niners and maaaybe the Raiders/Dolphins, virtually every franchise that could be considered to be within the top 10 of all time are cold weather teams that play outdoors.

If the Bills really build their new stadium to be indoors, I'd bet the farm that they never make it to another superbowl again. They will go the way of the Lions/Vikings.

What about players, though? If a player grew up in Cali or Florida or Texas, and he's a sought-after free agent, is he going to want to play in Buffalo? NYC teams can point to the city, Green Bay has that proud tradition, what does Buffalo have to market itself?

How does an indoor stadium help a cold climate team to market itself to free agents? I think the factors that influence free agent decisions are things like who is offering the most money or who offers the best chance of winning a title... not which stadium will have the most comfortable temperature during games. Are players really picking Minnesota over Chicago because of stadium temps? Clearly its not like playing outdoors in the cold has stopped the Patriots, Packers, Bears, Steelers, Broncos, KC, etc... from being attractive destinations for free agents. Besides, the NFL season is short and nothing is forcing guys who play for teams in cold weather climates to stay in a freezing hell hole like Buffalo or Green Bay during their offseason.

Also I dont think its a coincidence that so many of the most successful teams in NFL history are teams that play outdoors in the cold. Outside of the 49ers, Cowboys and maybe Raiders, virtually every franchise that could be considered among the top 10 most accomplished plays outdoors in an extreme climate. And before you say that cold weather teams are more successful simply because they are older on average, allow me to point out that the Arizona Cardinals are the oldest franchise in the league, and the Detroit Lions are the 5th oldest.

The overall trend has been to convert stadiums to closed building. There are 5-6 leftovers remaining, but I don't see that trend stopping anytime a team needs or wants a new stadium especially in cold snow-heavy cities.

It’s probably not even about football tbh, you only play football in a stadium 8 times per year and maybe a couple more if you make the playoffs.

Im guessing it has to do with using the stadium for a bunch of other shit, concerts and such.

That makes sense I guess... but Buffalo is a pretty small city, I dont think there are many musical acts that would be able to sell enough tickets to make a NFL size stadium a worthwhile concert venue. Buffalo already has an indoor hockey stadium that holds 18k (more than enough for Taylor Swift or whoever is the most popular artist right now), and Buffalo is only like 1.5 hours from Toronto and ~3 hours to Cleveland and Pittsburgh, so if a popular musician doesnt hit the Buffalo hockey arena there are still nearby places where they can likely be seen.

Anyway, if the Bills owner wants a new entertainment venue in Buffalo then he should build one of those... but if he wants a football stadium then he should build one that helps his franchise win more games.
