The Jazz sent Rudy Gobert to Minnesota in a deal that netted Utah four future first-round picks and 2022 first-round pick Walker Kessler, per ESPN. Reports from The Athletic and ESPN stated that Utah has no plans to trade Mitchell and would retool its roster around Donovan Mitchell. But there is some skepticism about Utah’s long-term plans in the wake of the Gobert trade. Several teams still view Mitchell as attainable for the right return.

People in touch with the Knicks prior to the draft said the club was wary of trading the combination of picks and players that it would take to land a player like Mitchell. The thinking, according to people in touch with the club at the time, was that there wouldn’t be enough left on the roster to field a contending team.

If Utah decides to trade Mitchell, Miami is certainly a team to watch. The Heat’s situation is complicated by the club’s pursuit of Kevin Durant (according to a source, several people were lobbying Durant on behalf of Miami on Thursday and Friday in the wake of his trade request out of Brooklyn).

Nick Nurse started his four NBA players Friday: Gilgeous-Alexander, who received loud applause from his hometown crowd at what used to be Copps Coliseum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Utah Jazz), Dwight Powell (Dallas Mavericks), and Olynyk (Detroit Pistons), plus national team mainstay Melvin Ejim.

At the same time, the sources say, the Jazz saw Gobert’s super-max contract as a hindrance. Utah’s current core reached its peak as a second-round playoff team, and Ainge thought it needed to move Gobert to break free from that. Other teams were interested, and other packages were available. Once Minnesota’s offer swelled to four firsts, a pick swap, plus Kessler, whom the Timberwolves drafted at No. 22 in the first round of the 2022 draft, the Jazz believed it was time to move, McDaniels or no McDaniels.

wanted McDaniels. I don't agree that they peaked. Needed a coaching change after the bubble. Tweek the roster. Had Stockston and Malone peaked in '95?

Defensively he’ll have to be used in drop coverage which has fallen out of fashion in the NBA, but he simply doesn’t move his feet or hips well enough to defend on the perimeter.
this would be the reason he's not an NBA starter or the next Gobert

There’s been quite a bit of buzz around the league about the Jazz having interest in Phoenix’s DeAndre Ayton, and there’s a faction that believes the Jazz are trying to get into talks with the Nets on acquiring Kevin Durant, who requested a trade on Thursday. There are also teams that would be more than happy to make a deal for Mitchell.
Can't see Durant wanting to play here without Gobert or Mitchell!

The Jazz had one of the bigger pick deficits in the NBA as recently as Wednesday. They were out two picks due to win-now trades made by Dennis Lindsey, but they’d also traded young players like Grayson Allen and Trey Lyles soon after picking them. Some of those trades were absolutely warranted, but the totality of the strategy made Utah one of the NBA’s oldest teams. Yet in the past 24 hours or so, they’ve managed to add a total of six first-round picks: an unprotected Philadelphia pick from a fairly combustible 76ers team in the Royce O’Neale trade with Brooklyn, four first-rounders from the Timberwolves here, a swap in 2026 and Walker Kessler, who just went No. 22 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. That’s one of the bigger asset turnarounds in recent league history. — Sam Quinn

More importantly they became one of the worst teams in the league heading into a historic lottery

The downside to the trade is the money situation. Most of these incoming players are under contract until 2024 or 2025, meaning the Jazz will not be able to take a swing at a big free agent anytime soon. Unless they can trade the new assets for picks, they need to pay these guys. That being said, Utah should not be in any rush to acquire picks now, and all but Bomaro and Kessler should be instant impact players.
I'd be surprised if the Jazz pay tax next year. Only around 7 million over after the trade I thinkMost of the vets on the team will be gone by the trade deadline. Hopefully sooner!

Even if you want Utah to give it all they have and try to win now, with these picks, if they are able to dump enough salary, they could make a deal with Phoenix to acquire Deandre Ayton, who would be a great rim-runner to pair with Donovan Mitchell.
Two max guys that have never carried a team. Shit show!

If Rudy Gobert relocates this summer, having an anchor in the paint will be very necessary for the Jazz. Whiteside has never been an offensive threat, but his shot-blocking, rebounding, and physical presence makes him a constant threat down low. Knowing that better teams might pick up the phone to inquire about signing him, the Jazz will have to offer up a little more cash than anyone else. Is he worth it? No, but if Gobert is gone then they need another option. If Gobert stays, let Whiteside walk. Otherize, he might be worth an overpay.
God know! Udoka and Kessler assuming Kessler is ready. If not look for another young vet

Being a phenom in the Summer League and G-League does not guarantee you will have success as an NBA player. Trent Forrest is walking proof of that. His court vision, defense, and ball handling are all good reasons for him to get a longer chance with Utah, or in the NBA as a whole, but his total inability when it comes to shooting will be his downfall.
He hardly played for the Stars

If he wants to stay in Utah, the Jazz could pay him a small amount and make it very clear that he will be in the G-League until he gets his shot to fall. Otherwise, he can sell his services to another team. Either way, I don’t think fans will hear much from Forrest this season, no matter where he plays.
not bringing a rotation player back to be in the gleague!

NBA Trades: 3 Utah Jazz trades to help Donovan Mitchell win: New York Knicks

Jazz receive: Evan Fournier, Cam Reddish
    help collect lottery balls sure!

    Jazz receive: John Collins

Hawks receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Bojan Bogdanovic, 2023 1st-Round Pick (via BKN, HOU, or PHI), 2027 1st-Round Pick
he excites me a bit more but it's probably worse than Trae/Collins which wasn't very good!

NBA Trades: 3 Utah Jazz trades to help Donovan Mitchell win: San Antonio Spurs

Jazz receive: Keldon Johnson, Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson
young guys, expiring contracts and assets. They aren't winning with Mitchell leading them!

Sources told both Jazz writer Tony Jones and me that Danny Ainge pushed hard to include McDaniels. Earlier versions of Utah’s ask included the four first-rounders, McDaniels, multiple pick swaps and some second-round picks as well. The Timberwolves held firm in refusing to include McDaniels, a versatile defender who blossomed under the glare of the playoff spotlight against Memphis and is entering his third season in the league.

Given all that, and the third-year leap they anticipate from Edwards, the stability they hope will bring even more out of Towns and the belief that it would be hard to find another star player who is open to Minnesota the way Gobert was — sources told The Athletic that Gobert expressed excitement about the opportunity of playing with the Timberwolves and that Towns, in particular, was supportive of the move — that one question just kept gnawing at the group while they labored over the decision.

Ainge tried to rape them! Settled for Vanderbilt instead of McDaniels. I'm sure Towns and Rudy are happy they won't have to play against each other

Word started to circulate on Thursday evening that there was progress being made toward a Gobert deal, but Wolves sources were pessimistic almost the whole way through. By Friday morning, sources said, the deal was in peril. Both sides were sticking to their guns and the Timberwolves started to look hard at other available rim protectors. In addition to Gobert, they had been linked to Indiana’s Myles Turner and Atlanta’s Clint Capela in previous reporting. The Wolves also made several calls to Brooklyn on Kevin Durant, sources said, but the Nets were asking for established All-Stars and a mountain of picks.

The Jazz and Nets kicked the tires on a trade involving Joe Harris and Royce O’Neale before the trade deadline, as previously noted on the ********* podcast. Instead, months later, the Nets surrendered a 2023 first-round pick for O’Neale.
