I’m not sure that’s true with basketball. Individual rankings may change but the tiers are firmly fixed and there’s nothing a player can do to hop them once they are retired or in the twilight of their career. Contemporary fans can’t lift retired players all time rankings most notably because they didn’t watch them at the time. So there’s not much you can change in terms of consensus when it comes to, let’s say, any player before 2000 at this point.

Not even being a lebron hating troll right now, but if Jordan is still consensus GOAT (75-80% overall, 65-75% among current youth) what exactly is lebron gonna do in his final several seasons to change that? Once he is retired, the next generation of nba fans can’t do anything to change that because they will not have watched him when he played.
