Gregg Popovich Dennis Rodman
In 1996, less than a year after his trade to Chicago, Rodman released his book Bad as I Wanna Be. Within the book, Dennis bashed the young, power-hungry GM Popovich. “The biggest problem in San Antonio was Gregg Popovich, the general manager,” Rodman wrote. “He wanted to be the coach and the general manager.Mar 27, 2022

There's a story about how Pop was literally one game away from being fired after the Spurs' disappointing 6-8 start 14 games into the 1998-99 season.
From game 15, the Spurs then went on a 9 game winning streak, and only lost a handful of games for the remainder of the season, which they ended up winning the championship in.
Not sure how accurate the story is, and if it has been made to sound more Hollywood-esque than it really was.

I've read that too. IIRC, the Spurs were playing in Houston that night, and Doc Rivers was the Rockets color commentator. The Spurs were going to fire Pop and hire Rivers as his replacement. Robinson and Duncan rallied the team in the locker room before the game, the Spurs won and as you said, that kicked off a 9 game winning streak. The Spurs steamrolled their way through the rest of the regular season, blasted through the postseason (15-2) and won their first title.
Oddly enough, Rivers was the head coach of the Magic when TD was considering leaving the Spurs and join Orlando to play with Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, and Doc as the coach. Things happened, Duncan decided to return to Pop and the Spurs and well... history.
