Default Nike Stock Is Bombing, But Jordan Brand Remains Their Main Profit Driver

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/nike-...213052888.html

Jordan was the strongest performer of Nike’s divisions with a 6% sales gain to $7 billion, compared to Men’s (1%), Women’s (0%) and Kids (1%).

Jordan brand revenue has doubled since 2020 as it expanded into more women’s gear, non-basketball items and international sales. The “performance” basketball shoe market is down over the past decade, but the “retro” or lifestyle business has more than made up for the declines.

It's no secret Nike stock has been in the toilet recently, with the Nike basketball division also selling like hot garbage. People have stopped buying basketball shoes in general.

The one and only real bright spot for Nike? Jordan Brand continues to perform well being their only division that's notably up in sales (6% up).

There will never be an athlete like Michael Jordan ever again, no one will have this kind of marketing sway 20+ years on from retirement. The general public speaks with their wallets.

Nike is also generally in big trouble, their current crop of athletes is not anywhere near as popular with the general public, they're still riding the coat tails of Michael Jordan from decades ago.

In general, most Nikes over the past 30 years are just ugly. I've never seen a LeBron, Durant, or Kobe signature shoe that I thought was attractive.

Basketball shoes in general have declined massively, the regular public isn't buying them as much anymore

    https://www.axios.com/2020/02/13/bas...-sales-decline

From 2014 to 2020, basketball shoes declined from 14% of the athletic sneaker business down to just 6% and I believe it's been stuck around there or even declined further in the years since.

The Jordan Brand is basically the only basketball brand that's growing, Nike's basketball division has gone down the toilet.

A lot of Nike shareholders are actually starting to complain about paying current basketball players big endorsement money since they don't draw big customers anymore. A lot of money spent for not a lot of return.

Michael Jordan, who hasn't play in 20+ years is still the most marketable athlete in basketball.

It's been more of a fashion brand than a basketball brand for a long long time already. Chuck Taylor must have been a hell of a player too lol. Seriously Jordan brand crossed over so long ago I'm not sure why you'd ever compare them to basketball shoes. Basketball shoes are ugly, some Jordan's included but Tinker made a handful of timeless designs that work with regular clothes and they can re-release them every year in "new" colorways forever. Nike has failed to capture that utility in almost any shoe since the 90s. Even Jordan brands new designs are crap unless they are a riff on old source material.

Jordan Brand is the only sector at Nike that's showing any growth.

Converse sales (Chuck Taylors) are also tanking alongside non-Jordan Nike stuff

    Sales down 20% for them.

If Nike didn't have the Jordan brand they would be in big, big trouble.

The reason I even mentioned chucks were because they still have relevance like 60 years after release and get boosts in popularity from time to time. I don't really know what you want me to do with the Jordan stock info. We know what I stated in the post is true until further notice. They have a small handful of models they can sell over and over in slightly different colors .....forever lol. Nike on the other hand has an even smaller amount of models they can do the same to for less success. Those designs are timeless and as long as culture (hiphop) doesn't shift away from them well still be wearing them in 2080 lol.

Cortez, waffle, blazer, dunks, presto, AF1. There are a ton of timeless designs by Nike that are not Jordans.

They've sadly gone out of style in the mainstream, and i still love a coupme.of those because im from that era.... but all of those are considered old school kicks to the kids today. Jordan's more modern look(on that select few models) without the corny futuristic designs we get now just work. And the models that still sell today will continue to for the foreseeable future. Hip hop had the mightiest influence on fashion and kicks to the point it's embedded in pop culture. We'll see if the next Gen of kids still wear them the way we and the couple after us will. I think the biggest detour Nike took was getting away from shoes that universally worked with clothes and leaned all in on the performance side. The look and colorways are so specific now that they kinda niched their own market.

It's a chicken/egg thing, the designs are interesting, but it's also because they are Air Jordans and there is tremendous nostalgia for the 80s/90s Jordan era. If Jordan didn't wear those shoes they wouldn't be that famous.

The Air Jordan I for example is a fairly generic looking shoe, but Nike is still sells them by the boat load because it's Air Jordan and it has reached iconic status.

Jordan Brand doubling in revenue in the last four years while Nike revenue has dropped in general is wild too.

7 billion for Jordan Brand compared to about $340 million for LeBron James' Nike line and James is still an active player.

I imagine in 20 years no one will care that much for Lebron James apparel or shoes.
