I think he understood murder was wrong and what he was doing, but I don’t think he understood the permanent nature of what he was doing. The best argument for that is not only he DID IT, but that he let them capture him. I was smart as a kid, and at 14 I probably was comfy with college level concepts, and on top of that, I had seen one of my family members die of chronic illness, so I could empathetically understand death; however, there is no way I would take any decision I made then as seriously. I’m not (overly lol) deranged so of course it never occurred to me, and I remember hearing about what happened. I even knew enough to be like, “This kid in my class could do that!” Still, I maintain it’s a different sort of disorder, even serial killers try not to get caught. It is unique. And I honestly do believe some of them could be rehabilitated, but I don’t think we are about to try. It’s sad in some ways because we might learn more about why it happens.
Maybe some day.

Re: Anyone else have a problem with charging a 14 year old as an adult?
Also if someone does put their name on something and release a kid like this, they are indeed taking a huge risk. However, what is psychology anyway? I know it's trash in a lot of ways, but if we can't find one person on earth who can make that sort of a decision with high confidence, then the whole field is trashhh.
We had dudes out there killing themselves with radiation sickness while trying to mess with fission. We have people who do crazy brain surgeries. Some things just require a lot of responsibility. Shit, it's a lot of responsibility when we choose to launch an attack on someone.
There should be a way, but I guess the best way to describe what I was saying about them not understanding that their actions are permanent or what they are really doing is like... imagine if the kid had just killed himself. He doesn't really have the understanding + he's not in a normal state of mind at all. Hormones are a bitch, etc. The difference is that yeah, more people died, but it's possible SOMEONE could be the one who was rehabilitated, and that would make a huge impact on the world. Then he could freaking go around and talk to people. Dudes said there is no way he could get a job, that would be his job. Write a book, live his life.
Obviously, you can be super cynical and say WELL HE'D JUST BE LOVING LIFE THEN, killing people, then being able to rake in money (a lot of which should probably go to the families, tho,) but I mean, if he was having a positive impact + didn't do anything criminal again, how can you be against that? Not saying it's possible, but just saying IF it were possible. I know people would hate, but why? And I personally DO think it's possible, in some cases. There are people who are qualified to make that decision. It's just a matter of them being allowed to make it.
But whatever, haha. Dude is going to jail for life. I do hope he gets solitary cuz people can yuck it up about what would happen to him in prison, but at least until he's 18 I super super disagree with that.
