Used truck prices are ridiculous
Just bought a used truck today. Going to go pick it up next Thursday or Friday. My wife thinks I'm nuts for spending almost 20k on a 20 year old compact truck but it only has 59,000 miles and it has the TRD Off Road pkg. No EGR or any of the newer emissions crap that messes up your engine either.
My criteria for shopping was
1st gen latest style 2001-2004
Manual transmission
4x4
I really wanted a double cab but you can't get a manual transmission with it in the first gen, and a stick was more important than the double cab to me. I have a Mustang as my daily but I've been too long without a truck. I used to have a first gen Tacoma and I missed it so much I knew I had to get another one soon
Not the actual truck in the pic I don't want any of you psychos tracking me down but almost exactly like it, except that one is a 2001 and mine is a 2004
Was debating between a Tacoma and an FJ but I find myself needing the truck bed occasionally so I chose it

Used cars in general are very pricey at least here in Canada.

One of the reasons I bought a first gen. 100% were built in California(same plant where Tesla builds their cars today). The 2nd gen 2005+ were built in Mexico and Texas(mostly Mexico). In addition to being bigger and clunkier, the newer Tacomas suffered massive paint and premature rust problems. That's why the older first gens have more resale value than the 2nd gens, and the ones in good condition keep skyrocketing in value. Toyota doesn't even make Tacomas in Texas any more, like the Dodge Ram trucks and Ford Bronco sports today, they are all made in Mexico

Ew a Mustang? Why would anyone look at an American make that’s not a truck?

There's a good reason I own one that I won't get into here. If I had to go out today and buy a new sports(or sporty) car with my own money, I probably wouldn't choose a Mustang

Re: Used truck prices are ridiculous
The toyota trucks seem to have insane resell value.
I was never a Mustang guy but I drove a newer GT not too long ago and it was actually really nice. It has a 10 or 11 speed auto transmission that makes it feel super responsive. I liked it.

Yeah a brand new Tacoma 4x4 extra cab in 2002 cost $22,700. With the SR5 and TRD options $27 and change. Inflation almost caught up with the used trucks in better condition. I've seen a lot of first gen Tacomas going for $25-30k but I doubt they'll get it
But a lot of trucks hold their value. My dad sold his Ram3500 diesel 4x4 for $26k around 2020 with 110k miles. He bought it new for $34k cash. Only $8k depreciation for 15 years and 110k miles of use. A Range Rover loses that the second you drive it off the lot

Nothing has better resale than a diesel. Congrats on your Tacoma though, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
And yeah rovers are overrated af. They break down too often and cost an arm and leg to fix.

thats not true. i bought a tacoma new off the lot in 2015 for 34k, traded it in for 30k with 60k miles years later. i could have gotten more money through a private party sale but i wanted the sales tax credit towards my raptor.

That's what's up. If you aren't particularly into cars it's definitely better to just get something affordable since they're depreciating assets.
