1. Joe Devance 6′7″ PF University of Texas-El Paso
Still needs a certificate of DOJ confirmation to be declared eligible in the draft… there’s no question he will be a great catch because he has size, game and versatility… won the PBL MVP two seasons ago and led his team Toyota Otis to the PBL finals… Played varsity ball for the UTEP, a division I school in the US NCAA… can play any of the three frontline positions, although power forward figures to be the position he’s more comfortable at… Go-to move is posting up on the left side of the basket and using great footwork and pump fakes to extricate himself from defenders… can play back-to-the-basket or facing it… has 3-point range… shot selection needs to improve though, as well as passing out of double-teams… Game is on the finesse side and rarely takes the ball strong to the basket.
2. Doug Kramer 6′4″ PF Ateneo de Manila
“The Big Doug”… A Rudy Hatfield starter kit… compensates lack of size with great strength, positioning and tough mindset… Sunk the winning basket off a Macky Escalona inbound pass which lifted the Ateneo Blue Eagles in game 1 of their title showdown with UST last year… Led the PBL in rebounding last conference… has made his mark as a defender in the amateurs and that doesn’t figure to change in the PBA… always tasked to defend the other team’s top big men even if he is terribly undersized… range is limited but he is a very intelligent player who knows what he can and can’t do on the floor… you want some showbiz stuff? Well, Doug’s girlfriend is TV personality Cheska Garcia, which is well, public knowledge.
3. Joel Solis 6′5″ PF Philippine Christian UniversityA very athletic player with great length and leaping ability… game could be best suited in the pros… starred for the title-winning 2005 PCU team in the NCAA… could get drafted based on potential and size… will be a very nice role player.
SMALL FORWARDS
1. John Christopher “JC” Intal 6′4″ SF Ateneo de Manila
Dubbed “The Rocket” because of the way he explodes on the floor… Make way Niño Canaleta, you now have a worthy challenger in the All-Star dunking competitions… Beat Canaleta in one of the dunking cagefest in a PBL all-star event using a Vince Carter dunk using the elbow to finish it off (Canaleta missed his last dunk)… Used the UAAP last season to announce he’s ready to enter big-time basketball… vastly-improved perimeter shooting touch and slashing ability will make him a greater force in the pros… athleticism is off the charts… needs to continue to add strength and improve defensive ability to make a mark in the pro league.
2. Yousif Aljamal 6′4″ PF San Beda College
Played all of his collegiate life as a power forward but has to shift to small forward in the pros… Plays like a young Vic Pablo – has solid perimeter shooting skills with rebounding ability… may struggle in the pros with his “tweener” status… he’s not strong enough to guard the big 4s and 5s and may lack the lateral movements to guard the league’s quick and athletic threes… however, if Pablo was able to make it, there’s no doubt this guy can.
OFF GUARDS
1. Ronjay Buenafe 6′1″ OG Emilio Aguinaldo College
One of the true sleepers of the draft… has a scorer’s mentality… can heat up pretty quick… standout of the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals… one of the few players on the draft pool who excels on both ends of the court… pretty feisty… perimeter shooting is impeccable… quick release is similar to Gary David… fearless going to the hole… shot selection is one thing he needs to improve on.
2. Jeffrei “Jeff” Chan 6′3″ SF Far Eastern University
One of the purest shooters in the draft… has great size… one of the best rebounders at his position… is not afraid to shoot the ball when the game is on the line … excellent defensive player who can block shots… sees the court very well… slashes, and drives inside.
3. Reed Friar Juntilla 6′1″ SG University of the Visayas
Belongs to a long line of great Visayan shooters such as Boy Cabahug, Ricric Marata, Moises Abangan, Carlito Mejos, Felix Duhig and Dondon Hontiveros… played for the University of the Visayas before taking his act to the PBL at Hapee to replace star guard June Simon who was elevated to the pros… one of the PBL’s top scorers.
4. Ryan Araña 6′1″ SG De La Salle University
Excellent defensive player who also has a deep offensive arsenal… proved that he can score (exploded for 38 points in one PBL game last year), and make stops at the same time… his jumper has improved tremendously enough to make defenders pay if they leave him wide open… at his best in driving to the basket where he uses incredible craftiness and an assortment of moves to get away from defenders.
5. Joselito “Jojo” Duncil 6′1″ SG University of Sto. Tomas
Created a lot of fuss in the UAAP after there were questions arising from his eligibility… Those issues forced him to dip his hand into the pro league, advancing his career plans by a year… a pure scorer… has potential to be good player in the pros because he can score from literally anywhere… loves to drive to the hole and fish some fouls… he’s one of the reasons why UST won the UAAP title last season.
6. Dominador “Noy” Javier 5′11″ OG University of Perpetual Help Rizal
If he’s only at least 3 inches, he could have a chance… A specialist… He’s a long range bomber and a dangerous scorer… he’s a combo guard who can explode any night without warning… Is he a “1” or a “2”… lacks great size to be an effective “2” guard in the pros… also lacks playmaking ability to be able to play the point guard spot effectively well in the pros… he’s also not known as a defensive player but could get a chance from teams looking for an instant scorer off the bench.
7. Joferson Gonzales 6′2″ OG Mapua Institute of Technology
He’s a shooter with great size… played varsity ball for the Mapua Tech Cardinals.
8. Jeffrey “Jeff” Bombeo 6′2″ OG Far Eastern University
Does nothing fancy nor spectacular… plays it simple but works hard on both the offensive and defensive end… a role player nonetheless… could be a longshot to be drafted.
9. Frederick “Derrick” Hubalde 6′1″ OG University of Sto. Tomas
Brother Paolo was drafted in the first round two years ago after a stellar rookie camp… hopes to follow the same route but still a longshot to be drafted… he’s hoping maybe Ginebra coach Jong Uichico (one who drafted Paolo) is again interested.
10. Donald Tadena 6’2” OG Holy Cross of Davao College
A three-point specialist from the MVBA… native of Cagayan de Oro… his ticket to the pros will be his three-point shooting which is already somewhat of a lost art in the PBA… he’s a key player for the Manny Pacman Warriors but he will be quite a longshot to be drafted.
POINT GUARDS
1. Ryan Reyes 6′1″ PG Cerritos College
The next great Fil-Am guard to invade the PBA after Ricky Brown, Jimmy Alapag, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Mark Caguioa… created quite a stir in the PBL with his deft outside shooting, fearless penetration down the lane, and excellent feel for the game… Has the size, athleticism and playmaking skills to be able to play both backcourt spots with ease… a cross between Jeffrey Cariaso and Jimmy Alapag… led the PBL in steals the past campaign.
2. Jonas Villanueva 6′1″ PG Far Eastern University
Was already a highly-touted guard even before he saw action for the FEU Tamaraws in the UAAP… great peripheral vision and looks quite a natural when he’s handling the ball and dishing it to open teammates… strong perimeter shooter with great accuracy on the three ball.
3. Marvin Cruz 5′8″ PG University of the Philippines
Probably the most exciting guard to come out of the amateur ranks since Johnny Abarrientos… despite standing only 5’8”, he is one of the better rebounding guards in the country… a statbuster – scores, grabs rebounds, generates steals, and even blocks shots despite his diminutive size… MVP of the 2007 SEABA tourney… very very fast and can change the complexion of a game with his speed, hustle and gung-ho attitude.
4. Mark “Macky” Escalona 5′11″ PG Ateneo de ManilaRose to become one of the point guards in the amateur circuit… lurked behind the shadows of LA Tenorio but he was handed down the cudgels by the school last year, hew wasted no time in proving he has what is takes to be a top-flight point guard in the pros… has a great size to run the point… highly-improved perimeter shooting and decision making make him a valued prospect at “1”
5. Khiel Misa 5′10″ PG University of Perpetual Help-RizalA scoring point guard… led the NCAA in average points last year and was also one of the league leaders in assists and stills… looks up to Alaska guard and fellow Olongapo native Willie Miller… he’s one of the best guards to come out of the NCAA ranks since Boyet Bautista last year… he’s unlikely to be drafted in the first round because this year’s draft is deep in point guards.
6. Mark Moreño 5′10″ PG University of Mindanao
Former UM Wildcat who is making a name in the PBL as a true blue playmaker… ranks among the league leader in assists and steals… not a scoring threat… needs to improve his free throw accuracy and perimeter shooting to have a pro future… in a league where there are less and less pure point guards, he stands out and will be valuable to teams lacking in a true playmaker.
7. Daryl Pepito 5′10″ PG St. Edwards College
A flashy guard from Australia… played for the Hornsby Spiders in the Australian Basketball Association… member of the RAL Kabayan Titans who saw action against the PBA Legends in an exhibition held 2 years ago in Sydney, Australia…. Other than that, there is not much information about him… he need to impress scouts in draft camp to earn draft consideration
8. Ronnie Zagala 6’0” PG FEU/PSBAcombo guard who can heat up pretty quick… applied for the draft two years ago but withdrew his name from consideration… unless he performs out-of-this-world in the rookie camp, he’s unlikely to be drafted.
9. Alex Angeles 5′8″ PG San Beda CollegeStarting point guard for last year’s NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions… Needs to have a strong rookie camp to be able to gain the nod of scouts.
Next week, I’ll give you an analysis each team’s needs and my mock draft version of the 2007 PBA Draft.
You know what...I think if Filipinos want to compete in a major sport internationally they should make baseball their national sport.
All you need is skill to excel in the sport.
and futbol, i just dont see the Philippines making any big leaps in the worldwide scene, possibly Asia but not worldwide, we should stick to games we can compete in, Chess,Boxing, Soccer, Baseball and Badminton
POTENTIAL top draft picks Samigue Eman and JC Intal were among those who showcased excellent skills during the strength, agility and endurance tests that ushered in the three-day PBA Rookie Camp yesterday at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.
Edilgusto Soriano, Alex Angeles, Donald Tadena, Daryl Pepito, Macky Escalano and Dom Javier also impressed scouts and coaches who were present, proving they have what it takes to join the pro bandwagon.
Eman, a prized recruit by Rain or Shine from the University of Mindanao, was measured tallest among all 47 applicants at 6-foot-8 while Ken Bono, a former UAAP MVP, was the heaviest at 104 kilograms. Eman also has the longest wingspan at 86.5 inches.
Soriano, a San Beda product, emerged as the best in bench press and push ups, doing 37 and 75 repetitions in separate tests, while Angeles, another Red Lion, was No. 1 in pull-ups with 23.
In the agility drill, Intal and Tadena of Rizal Technological U shared top honors with 4.72 seconds.
Intal, at 6-foot-3, emerge as the best leaper, doing 10’11 in the vertical jump and 11’3 in the long jump. Eman did 11’3 in the vertical jump and 11’3 in the long jump.
Pepito outsprinted everybody in the 60-m dash with a clocking of 7.31 seconds while Escalano and Javier tied for No. 1 in sit-ups with 66 each.
Apart from the strength, agility and endurance tests, this year’s PBA aspirants, who have been divided into four groups, will also play three games each in the three-day Accel-sponsored rookie camp that should provide coaches a glimpse of what’s in store in the Draft market.
Welcoat unsure yet if Eman is the man
08/15/2007
By Arman Carandang
Eman Samigue could easily become the No. 1 pick in the PBA’s annual Draft, being the tallest among the 47 hopefuls who could be an answer to Welcoat Paints’ ardent wish.
Yet, if you ask coach Leo Austria if Eman is the one, the Welcoat bench tactician just would not confirm. He may have some reasons why he keeps on saying the team has yet to decide on its top pick in the Draft on Aug. 19 at Market! Market! in Taguig.
The truth is, many things can still happen before draft day. And Austria said he is not discarding the possibility that a team or teams may offer a trade in exchange for Samigue, the tallest among the draftees at 6’8”.
“We are definitely looking for big man. That is our priority at the moment. But we could not say we’re gonna pick him (Eman) because many things can still happen before the day (of the draft),” said Austria, who was with his coaching staff in yesterday’s rookie camp at the Moro Lorenzo Gym.
“Malay natin, bigla may mag offer ng trade off na malaki din. Di tayo nakakasigurado na wala, medyo ilan araw pa din bago yong Draft,” Austria added.
Owing to the Dragons’ dismal finishes in their maiden season in the pro-league, Welcoat will be the first team to choose from among the 47 aspirants who will make themselves available in the annual Draft, which will be supervised by Sonny Barrios in what could probably be his first official function as officer-in-charge of the league.
Austria and his coaching staff, in an utter show of their seriousness to make Welcoat competitive in the forthcoming All-Filipino Conference, took some time to have a glance at the aspirants who were taken to Moro Lorenzo Gym to show their wares, and Austria was particularly impressed by Joe Devance.
According to Austria, he was impressed by Devance’s ability to shoot from both inside and outside, while also making mention of Ken Bono, who is the heaviest player at 140 kilograms.
“Na impress ako nung Devance. Nakaka shoot kahit saan, sa loob, sa labas. May ilalabas talaga,” Austria told the Tribune yesterday. “Kaya lang talaga, hindi rin ako makapag-decide dahil baka kung sabihin ko na si ganoon o si ganito ang kukunin namin, tapos di naman nangyari,” Austria said.
The coaching staff in consultation with the management, according to Austria, will be holding a meeting the day before the Draft day to decide on whom they will pick.
HE HAS been given the green light to join the PBA Rookie Draft this Sunday and Joe De Vance has shown he has the skills and talent to make it big in the league.
But there’s this nagging question about the 6-foot-7 Fil-Am.
"Will he play? And for how long?" asked a PBA coach. "Mahirap kasing mag-gamble sa kanya dahil baka bigla na lang siyang umalis."
It is widely-known that De Vance dabbled as a real estate agent after leaving University of Texas and while sorting out his papers for the draft. Reportedly, he has been relatively good at it, making anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 a month.
Those earnings, translated into pesos, far surpass the usual PBA pay scale for rookies of between P50,000 to P150,000 a month.
"Nariyan siguro ang passion niya sa basketball, main reason why almost two years niyang tri-nabaho ang citizenship papers niya," said the coach.
"Pero there’s this doubt, lalo na kapag hindi naging katulad nang inaasahan niya ang magiging PBA career niya."
De Vance, born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 12, 1982, submitted his papers to the pro league last Aug. 5, making him eligible for the draft along with 46 others.
He is considered by most of the league’s tacticians as among the top prospects, a belief he enhanced with a show of shooting skills from all angles in the Rookie Camp at the Moro Lorenzo Gym.
"So far De Vance has impressed me a lot," said Talk N Text coach Derick Pumaren. "But of course I am not hoping na aabot pa kami para makuha siya. By the time we get our turn, nakuha na siguro siya."

Mike Holper was also set to sign a two-year contract extension with Ginebra yesterday.

2007 PBA Pre-draft Camp (Day 1): Guards dominate play
In the first day of the rookie camp, a lot of eyes were glued on big men Joe Devance, Samigue Eman and Ken Bono. It was the play of guards Jojo Duncil, Jonas Villanueva, Dom Javier and Ardy Larong, however who made the difference as they led their respective teams to victories.
Ex-UST Tiger Jojo Duncil topscored a game-high 16 points while Villanueva contributed 11 points and 5 assists to lead the Coke-Blue team to a 63-52 win over the Welcoat-Red squad.
Noy Javier had an explosive day, firing away long range bombs en route to scoring 14 points, backed up by 2 boards, 1 dime and 1 steal while Larong had 12 points and 6 rebounds as Sta. Lucia-White team made mincemeat of the Air 21-Yellow’s defense to win pulling away 69-58.
With Macky Escalano ably directing plays and Samigue Eman and Yousif Aljamal imposing their presence in the paint, the Blue team opened a 20-9 spread after one quarter before taking a 35-20 lead at halftime.
Doug Kramer had a double-double game with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Fil-Am Joe DeVance added 12 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Red team.
The White team made a searing breakaway in the third period and went on to win the game with Javier, Larong, RJ Masbang, Tristan Veranga and Ryan Reyes shining for the team.
They overcame Ken Bono’s 15-point and 8-rebound showing for the Yellow squad.
Backing up Bono were Frederick Hubalde with 12 points, Red Juntilla with 9. Former UAAP star JC Intal was not in his element, scoring only 2 points.
Javier and Larong presided over White’s breakaway from a 28-26 edge at halftime.
Samigue Eman and JC Intal, however firmed up their place as potential top picks in the 2007 PBA Draft by turning in impressive numbers during the physicals. Eman measured 6-8 without shoes, 2 inches short of his listed height of 6-10 (previous drafts ago, 6-7 Mark Kong and 6-7 Ervin Sotto measured 6-5). Ken Bono was the heaviest at 104 kgs or 229 pounds. Eman registered the longest wingspan at 86.5 inches.
Others who shone in the physicals were Edilgusto Soriano, Alex Angeles, Donald Tadena, Daryl Pepito, Macky Escalona and Dom Javier.
Soriano was the best in bench press and push-ups, doing 37 and 75 repetitions in the separate tests.
Angeles was No. 1 in pull-ups with 23.
In agility drill, Intal and Tadena of Rizal Technological University, shared top honors with 4.72 seconds.
Intal, who measured at 6-3, was also the best leaper, doing the vertical jump at 10 feet and 11 inches and the long jump at 11 feet and three inches. Eman did 11 feet and three inches in vertical jump and 11 feet and five inches in long jump.
Pepito was numero uno in the 60-m dash with a clocking speed of 7.31 seconds while Escalona and Javier tied for No. 1 in sit-ups with 66 each.
The annual Rookie Draft will be held this Sunday at the Market! Market! in Taguig City with the Welcoat Dragons expected to exercise their No.1 draft pick on Eman.
I have a fax copy coming from Chairman Tony Chua(Red Bull) of the PBA office this morning regarding the Complete 1st & 2nd round draft rankings. Here it is:
From what i gathered today, i was in the Rookie Camp, Air21 would like to get the #4 pick from Coke in exchange for Telan.
Second Round:
1) Air21 (from Coke Pacana Trade)(this could be shifted back to Coke as part of that agreement by Air21 getting the 4th pick+Telan)
2) Welcoat
3) SLR
4) Air21
5)Red Bull (from PF Camaso Trade) (Purefoods option 2007 or 2008)
6) Alaska
7) Red Bull
8)TNT
9) Red Bull (from SMB Tugade Trade)
10) Air21 (from Ginebra Tubid Trade)
Now, the concensus from the coaches & 2 mega agents i talked to earlier in the final day of the Rookie Camp, Samigue Eman is lucky to even make it to the Top 4!
Ryan Reyes is the most sought after player by almost all the teams. There were rumors that the Air21 asst coaches(they coached the White team of Ryan Reyes & JR Quinahan) is trying to hide Ryan Reyes by not fielding him longer as the team is planning to pick him at #4 if they succeed on getting the pick from Coke.
But Air21 will face some competition with SMB team, who is now seriously considering tapping the Fil-Am guard at #2. Other SMB prospects, JC Intal & Joe Devance. Coincidentally, Joe Devance would like to play for SMB. My friend, a host of an AM Radio Basketball show made an Interview with Devance & it will be aired tommorow Aug.17 at DZSR 918 at 10AM.
Welcoat is also seriously considering Joe Devance over Samigue Eman.
At 3rd, SLR, quietly looking at Ken Bono or Samigue Eman.
Then at 4th, if Air21 gets that pick, they will use it to tap Ryan Reyes & a bigman for the 5th pick.
Alaska is also deadset on Doug Kramer & Ryan Reyes.
JR Quinahan also passed the test with flying colors as he was the most consistent of all the Bigmen. Same goes with Yousef Aljamal. But he might drop late in the 1st round to early 2nd round. Reason? His height versus the position he plays.
JC Intal looks awesome, but the teams picking in the 1st half was loaded in the position he plays.
Daryl Pepito made that gutsy winning acrobatic driving layup in the middle with Joe Devance going for the block.
Regarding PBA rumors, all the teams tied to get/buy Ranidel De Ocampo from Air21, bidding went to P15 Million but Air21 said, NO Dice!
SMB wanted Arwind Santos but Air21 also declined.
Coke is looking to acquire Chris Calaguio from SMB since last year.
There's also some kind of Negotiation happening between Ginebra & Air21. Either player trades or Draft pick to be acquired by Ginebra in the 1st round.
Townsend played college basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and was selected with the last pick in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1978 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He concluded his NBA career in 1982 as a member of the Indiana Pacers.
Townsend's mother is from the Philippines and his father is American.
2. Ricardo Brown- 1985 PBA Most Valuable Player of the Year, was originally drafted by the Houston Rockets in the 1979 NBA Draft.
Picked No. 59 overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. Never played an NBA game but became one of the best Guard in the Philippine Basketball Association
Allan Vito Flores Caidic (born 15 June 1963, Pasig City, Philippines) is a former professional basketball player from the Philippines. He is considered by many to be one of the most prolific scorers in Philippine basketball and the greatest pure outside shooter the country has ever produced. A left-hander and a deadly offensive weapon, he is often called the “Triggerman” because of his ability to make outside shots from the three-point zone despite being heavily guarded. He is a player who could slay teams with a single flick of his left wrist and brought headaches and heartaches to the opposition.
Over the years, Caidic, once a complete offensive player from the inside and the outside, suffered many injuries as a professional player. Although, the injuries slow him down, he remained a deadly shooter from the perimeter three-point zone.
He first drew national attention while playing college hoops at the University of the East (UE), before joining the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in 1987, where he broke several Filipino and PBA all-time records -- including the most points scored in a single game by a Filipino (79 points), the most three-point field goals made in a single game (17 triples; breaking his previous record of 15 triples), the most three-point field goals in a career (1,242 triples) and the most consecutive free-throws in a row (76). He has played with several PBA teams and won numerous championship titles (mostly in the PBA All Filipino Cup); he has also played for the Philippine national basketball team including the 1998 Philippine Centennial Team.
Whilst in the league, he was considered Asia’s most feared trifecta icon and one of the world’s deadliest three-point shooters. The vaunted Chinese and Korean national basketball teams recognized this ability by always reminding their players to be on the lookout for “Philippine No. 8”, referring to Caidic’s regular jersey number while playing for the National Team.
